the idea of modifying an old design for CAS is not necessarily a bad idea but the A-5 is unsuitable for the role. better to use something more reliable and robust like the K-8 as base.

Iranian claims were not verified by independent sources. Most of the claims come from IRIAF pilots.

And unlike the people who produced the EE Lightning, F-106, F-4B/C/D, and many of the early MiG-21s, Dassault had the foresight to fit the Mirage with guns from the very beginning. could you imagine the outcome of the 1967 war for the Israelis without guns on their Mirages??:eek:
The AIM-154 was a bomber-killer, & I’ve read analyses which suggest it would be of limited use against fighters.
The Tornado is essentially a bomber airframe – most Tornadoes are bombers only.
On the few occasions the USN fired it in combat (all against fighters), it failed or missed. Not enough to be statistically significant, though. How effective it was in Iranian hands is uncertain.

I thought similar till I learned the details about the losses or damage of A-4s during CAS in YKW 73. Just after they changed from low level to medium level operations the loss rate dropped considerably. The coming F-35 is tailored for operations in medium heights and above for similar reasons.
Sens, could you explain in a little bit more detail what you mean? What were the actual weapons systems used to cause so much damage to the Israeli AF? Have you got a breakdown list of the number and type of the IAF aircraft shot down and the weapons system used to shoot them down?

Serviceability of the the B-1B in the US was often no more 60% – and that for what is a simpler aircraft.
I think the Tu-160 is a huge black hole on resources. The funding for 15 Tu-160 could cover the cost of 30 Tu-95s – who knows??

The actual serviceability of the 15 or so Tu-160s in RuAF service is a hotly debated subject. It’s not a Cessna…

Sure it can, just as a Chinook can lift another Chinook. The question is, at what maximum altitude?
I’ve asked this question before, if a Mi-26 crashes a too high an altitude, how are you going to lift it out if it’s too heavy for even another Mi-26 to lift?
Surely this is then an argument for the IAF to choose the Chinook for the heavylift contract, and then they can use the 4 or 5 Mi-26s they already have in service since the 1980s to haul any new Chinooks’ ass of the mountain top…;)
