RE: Thunder city colours
maybe it would not be cost efficient to replicate full RAF type schemes and finishes, which require special exemption from the CAA, and since these aircraft are registered in zimbabwe they may not even have the ability to replicate fully authentic finishes, because that version of the CAA may not allow it.

RE: Picture caption competition

RE: Re-enactors, Actors and medals
as regards the wearing of medals, anyone who has earnt a medal ever, can wear it wherever they want, as long as they keep to the rules set out, as to how they wear it. as for actors wearing ribbons and medals, actors are there to portray a character, they cannot do this accurately if they do not wear what the person they are portraying would have worn. as far as authentic uniforms go-and the tom hanks thing mentioned above. it is known that many WW2 RAF officers did in fact wear non comm uniform, it was made of a rougher material, and was thicker, therefore warmer, always a good thing at 10 000ft. and some non comms wore officers cut clothing, with hidden tapes, in case they were shot down, so that they could pass as an officer to hopefully receive better treatment.

RE: phred’s comment
night fighter by cf rawnsley, i believe contains an account whereby, at the fighter establishment a p38 pilot bet a spit pilot that he could not beat him in a dog fight- so off they went, and the P38 got hammered, over the airfield, if its not this book, i’ll find out which one it is when i go home, because I do remember that the p38 pilot had his ego softenend a bit on that flight

RE: Picture of the day 04/12/01
yes it is a little hard to get to, since the aircraft is parked outside the HAS complex for this squadron, which is in the middle of the base if i remember rightly!

RE: Picture of the day 30/11/01

RE: Possible RAF base closures
cranwell operates dominees and jetstreams from the paved runways, which are quite large, certainly transport large anyway, there are also grob tutors based there with CFS and uni air squadron, it is fully equipped to cope with nearly anything the runway is big enough of taking!!!

RE: Whistling Mustang
believe you would hear it from any mustang, it could just be the way that that particular aircraft is put together, it is a small tolerance inbetween the oscillation needed for producing a sound, i have only seen the OFMC aircraft display, in high speed aerobatics. it could be how the aircraft is operated, the pilot might use the aux. door more often, all the pics i have seen, during aeros have been with the door open, i particularly like this display, for that reason, it is a very business like aircraft, and the whistle just acentuates this IMHO!!!

RE: Whistling Mustang
I believe the whistling noise actaully comes from the airscoop auxiliary outlet door behind the main scoop. This is arrived at by forcing air through a shaped hole, making it resonate, ie. blowing a whistle, which is the same thing.

RE: Best single engined fighter-bomber of WW2?
so did the MB5 actually see service, I thougt it started and finished life as a prototype.
RE: Best single engined fighter-bomber of WW2?
not the same as the tsetse then??? not sure about what mark that one was, if it wasnt the molins’ gun, as for this fighter business, the only time it was ever used in the fighter capacity purposefully was with the night fighter units. We could argue that it was neither a fighter or a bomber, in its FB clothes, and it certainly wasnt that much of a recon aircraft in FB clothes either, negating the GR prefix!! It would probably be best left as an interdictor aircraft, ie. an aircraft equipped such that its main role is ground attack, and which also has the added ability of taking on its own air defense task. As a fully loaded aircraft it wasnt a great aircraft to use to take on the enemy, and crews relied on its speed to evade, without an internal load it did have a credible air to air ability.

RE: BBMF other types ?
that would unfortunately mean a loss in power, if I remember rightly- not sure the powers that be would be happy about that one!!!
