least it didnt stop unexpectedly on the pilots as often as the inline did!! i think thtat had somthing to do with grit, or breaking down rubber seals which over heated the engine and seized it.

i would say that it was the typhoon, for its versatility, and toughness, charles ‘windmill’ demoulins book is very good, would recommend it to anyone interested in the typhoon.

yes the nimrod story is true. There was no sight in the cockpit, and it depended on the sidewinder locking on to somthing itself, and hoping it was the right target!!

a fighter can be defined as, any such aircraft that is given the task of defence as its primary role within an airforce. This includes dog fighters and superiority fighters, please note the difference. the mosquito’s PRIMARY mision was that of bomber, except for the ten or so marks which were built as night fighters, and specific to the task of night air defence and interdiction. The FBVI is the one type which joins the aircrafts bombing role, with the fighter role. this aircraft might better be defined as an interdiction type, in that it is primarily used to strike ground targets, but also has a well defined capability as an air defence asset.

operationally these were identical to the rhubarbs carried out by pairs of typhoons, spits, hurris and blenheims, not the same as circuses carried out by sometimes, upto whole wings, to entice the luftwaffe to fight!! very successful aircraft was the mossie just what was needed, at the right time!! FBVI of the Banff strike wing i think were particularly interesting, have seen photo’s where there are upto twelve mosquitoes, in one frame attacking one ship!!!! same as with the beaufighters. anyone here have any picks of the highball aircraft????

    RE: Russian plane down!

thats a very one sided view keltic. yes these accidents happen, but there are procedures in place- as i’m sure you are aware to make the range safe and to inform all likely air corridor users of such tests. Why was the airliner flying over a live firing weapons range??? as it would appear-if it was shot down by a launched missile? there are radio frequencies for range controllers and airspace users to use so that they can be conflicted accordingly- it begs the question, who messed up the most here? yes it is very sad that this has happenned, but we dont know all the parameteres, so to say that clear cut, it was the ukranian navies fault, none others, is wrong in this instance right now, it may turn out that it was an authorised weapons systems check that malfunctioned, it may be that the TU154 strayed into restricted and controlled airspace without knowing what was happenning, and provided a better target for the missile, than the practice target. Without having the range controllers frequency- the range controller could not tell them otherwise, so they were blind to the threat- they do not have radar warning receivers in airliners do they???? it could be that the crosswinds were stronger than expected and they flew, without knowing, into the restricted airspace, which is always in operation for live firing excercises, it could be that air traffic control did not inform the tu154 pilot that that particular area of controlled airspace was in use at the time-as they should do.

RE: What do you think is the best kit?

what a question merc!!!!welllllllllllll you know i just dont know, but if i had to say then, for its age and therfore the very good job that was done by the model makers i would like to hand it to the 1/48 monogram CF101, my father has the still unbuilt kit, and its being re released, by revell/monogram, shall be getting one soon!!!! for a new kit i would prob say the accurate miniatures avenger, or the tamiya swordfish. If i could have a combination of kit and aftermarket products i couldnt choose between the dragon FW190 D9 and the 109 engine/gunbay/cockpit set, or the monogram Bf110 G6 and the CMK/Aires cockpit and engine set, sad i know, but hey gotta do somthing when your not at work, or at uni, or devoting time to the long suffering girlfriend, or sleeping, or eating, or on the bog-although………………….

    RE: SR-71

have never seen the monogram offering but have seen the built and boxed italeri version, and i thought it was not bad actually, the TR2 by them was very good i thought, good internal detail, and only the wing to fuse join to worry about.

ahh i c now-yeah but then how do you get the buggers off the sheet if you’ve coated them in gloss varnish????? interesting one, i would suggest coating them and over the perimeter of the decals with non-water soluble varnish, and then cutting out very carefully with a scalpel, that should do the trick!

    RE: PhantomII

would have to be the tamiya or hasegawa version, the revell version is later than the EJ, must be after market decals!

    RE: Harry

i would like to say that the ‘best’ mig 29 kit, is prob not the monogram one!!!!IMHO have the proof that the 1/48 academy mig29a with the neomega resin cockpit is a very good reproduction, if a little finicky to build because of the way it is moulded.

RE: Anyone here build model kits?

    hey frank
what you need is to buy the decal sheet, thats compatible to your printer-i wouldnt be surprised if DACO didnt do it, they are local to you arent they??? well i found at least three people who make it on the hannants site. I suppose ink jet printers are just as good as others, prob better, as you know better than me, that laser printers get very hot, and since the decals are basically plastic polymers the heat might melt the decal film.

RE: Anyone here build model kits?

used to fly from cosford!! their model collection is extensive- but i prefer the 1/1 scale version better!!! ID models did the V bombers, ie victor valiant and vulcan, i think they are 1/48, but i reckon the one at cosford is 1/72. sure about the F16 xl being monogram?? havent heard of that before, seems a little out of place for monogram kits, not really the types to produce one off aircraft are they???
