It has been hard to find coverage of any restorations and new build warbirds until the new series came along and shows on Netflix. That is Plane Resurrection. A lot of technical achievements in the former USSR have no film coverage . I think that is because there is still a sensitive attitude to security with a careful regard for what people really need to see when production processes are filmed. Oddly this has become more common in the West with security gaurds in the UK dashing out of commercial locations objecting to a person with an SLR camera filming the outside of the property from a public road.
Astonished around 300 built and some survice..https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Eagle_A-101

They are slipping up, used to be a rule that all serials were covered during transport moves….
Very interesting chapter Robert, thanks. As a keen consumer of wartime writings and historians offerings, I do note a special style of story telling in your approach. Replacing the usual standard dry detailing with picture painting and news headlines of those days i feel that there is value in the book. Hopefully it will be selected for publication.
This also opens the window on what else is out there regards aircraft at depth, perhaps remote recovery will be possible?
well said J boyle…”The truth is more boring than fiction” and ” Never let the facts stand in the way of a good story” Good luck with the dives.
That issue has sold out so they went to Northolt…..
Kenneth, concerns have been expressed by many in several on line forums. But I would not want pre judging the outcome to be the cause of lack of support. If the aircraft can satisfy safety checks etc why prevent it from going back to work? It is not the job of forumites to decide the future of this project. Instead it is open to supporters in the same way that several other restorations have been funded ie public appeals. Do you really think aircrew would risk lives if they had doubts about the work carried out and overseen by a real licenced engineering company? In other words…give them a break and ease up on the negative vibes……

Perhaps David the proposal to the UN offered a really low price which of course gets an intererested response from them.
Not sure why some think this is unusual, certainly Buffalo airways face challenges but a lot of air transport companies have the same challenges. Only the high profile airlines have the resources to keep operating very modern fleets. And in many cases this is related to passenger ops. The air freight world has flown a varied fllet for many years and there are many examples of long stored airframes re enterering service. Good luck with the CL44 Guppy project.
Given the short flying disance from Old Warden to Duxford and the relative easy public access at both locations I would suggest that choosing the home base is made around the ground engineering support. From my enthusiasts viewpoint i an always happy to see rebuilds progress and the results displayed.
Good luck on the search for wreckage Grahame, as a former diver I know how close you can be and still not spot the target. Geoff you do raise interesting questions the answers to which are unlikely to be on the sea bed. Was it possible that the airman concerned was used to organising engine test runs and hid his preparations that way? he could also have been on flights as a passenger with an interest in handling the controls if his backgroundwas aircraft engineering?
Huge on line database here..http://www.aviationancestry.co.uk/?searchQuery=Royal+air+force&startYear=1960&endYear=1980
