They have to do exercises like this for training and unit qualification. Its not an un-necessary exercise. All kinds of things are done that you don’t see that are less glamorous but just as important. Command post exercises with a large force. Loading and preparing the jets, nuclear weapons handling security and safety procedure, working in total force exercises. I would rather see them do this than letting the stuff sit, which would be more of a hazard with out this kind of training.

S.O.G. didn’t approve of Behind Enemy Lines though. Reason? The pilot in the movie used ‘profane language’, something the Good Pilot Scott would of course never do.

My comments were based on the idea that the Su would do most A2A and the SH would do strike. The SH is expensive, but line it up with a big offset givaway deal and it could be a possibility. As mentioned it can carry a wide menu of strike munitions.

Don’t know if the C/D would be an idea for FMS. The USN ones have so many hours on them from all the high ops tempo that the good airframes are being cherry picked and the real bad ones if they go to the bone yard, you wouldn’t want, unless you have some $$$ for an expensive refirb. The jet has some quirky refirb issues because of its original design as does the E/F model.

Here is some interesting commentary from a guy that works in the industry by the name of “tomcat”. This is in the ACIG F-18E/F forum thread:

Negative, it’s a Charlie Foxtrot and a complete waste of money. The F-18 C/D’s are getting the entire center section roughly from the forward wheel well bulkhead to the aft WW bulkead removed and a new section replaced. The Keel area of the 18’s are extremely life limited.

Plus the new SH have keel beam crack problems. Saving weight by spreading out fasteners, billiant…………….NOT! So once the SH reaches 500 hrs it has to go in for keel beam repairs……..

Well there you go. The F-18E/F saving money once again for the USN ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

Problem with “low intensity” is a few new MANPADs all of the sudden make some of these slow airframes risky. I like the Sri Lanka thing with the MiG-27 ( swinger good for heavy loads on shortish fields on hot days ) .

I hope they ask the USAF before buying it. I mean how is that plane (Slower Hornet + tanks + jammers) ever be able to escort a F-22 or F-35 or even an F-15E as a jammer. Do they want the strikers to throttle back so that the jammer can keep up ??
How is the Growler to cover ingress and egress when it is at Bingo fuel ?? Can they jam while flying on the boom ??

And how is the E/F-18G to keep up with the Navys own F-35s, when they arrive ?? I has not the spped nor the range.

I just hope the USAF will go for an own jammer again. They should compensate Boeing by buying an E/F-15F or something. Imagine conformal jammers between the intakes. That plane would be fast and have the endurance to be a usefull jammer. And Boeing would even get some work. ๐Ÿ˜€

If they really decide on the Growler to be the dedicated US jammer, then perhaps the Navy wants to buy some KC-767s, as they will need them.

x45 UCAV will be the next USAF jammer but that will be a while. The EA-6 will still be around a long while.

    armchair ? what?

You working for Boeing now PH ?

I think the funniest one yet is after 500-600 hours the bottom center section of the jet has to be refirbed because of structural wear.

Hey but if you read the press releases from the Navy the latest nose manufacturing methods saves x amount of dollars and is a real big savings for the taxpayer. Heck they are “saving” so much money the jet should be free. Need to teach accounting to the midshipmen at the boat club for young boys.

Watching the USN field aerospace systems the last few years is like watching the Jonestown massacre. Everyone have a swig of Kool-Aid

Like the Time S.O.G. was on another mission and everyone else was knocking down those P.O.S. strafe target Yugo jets that were pretending to be combat jets and got their ass handed to them. S.O.G. goes to fire an AIM-9 at one and misses! I mean , its like clubbing baby seals for gods sakes and he misses the damn thing. I mention this to Arthur and he says something like the sun must have been in Scotts eyes or something. I mean geeezz… years from now S.O.G will flip out and kill a bunch of people and Arthur will say something like… “poor Scott, he must have been having a bad day… ”

Well it is at least refreshing that a threat briefer understands what the hell is going on. You will have to get a joint special duty to a USN Super Hornet unit as an intel briefer.

That could be entertaining. Chase the pilots around the ready room holding a model of a Flanker. “Run for your lives you Navy pukes. Thats all you can do!”

Voice over the 1MC “Shore Patrol to Ready 5 on the double, the intel guy flipped again”. ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

Be different too, some years in the future when they decide to use weapons that aquire a Euro/Chinese sat net when they fall from the jet.

Hit any fixed target on the map within range of the jet in any weather. Israel ( who has somewhere between 1000-2000 JDAM kits now), is of course fearful not only that Saudi might get it ( the Saudi F-15 jets are being wired for JDAM and AMRAAM now- unknown what if any, deals have been signed for delivery of munitions ) but Egypt is on the list to get JDAM next ( delayed ). So think of it this way. A small country like Israel can be hit by this weapon in any weather and the weapon is dirt cheap, and the launch profile is helpful to the survivability of the jet dropping it. The smart thing would to have never let Israel have it in the first place and we wouldn’t be in this mess. ( duh )

Anyway. Back to the Saudis. I seriously doubt there will be anymore major U.S. jet deals to S.A. never say never but I doubt it. I believe that UAE will also be very strong in that area also.
