JSF still makes sense as the last generation of manned fighters that’s capable of fighting on it’s own and controlling UCAVs. After that is the new generation of UCAVs that can be trusted to protect larger aircraft acting as controllers…then there goes the manned fighter planes.

Well, there are several ways to skin a cat. As for the first night of a war where you are hitting fixed targets and where paths feed through traditional fixed radar corridors ( providing you have had enough recon ELINT before hand ) Being “controlled” by another airframe can be done in the “fence out” area where needed but for going against fixed targets on that first night. Once you send them “fence in” they should be able to hit those type of targets OK. Especially since it would be a team effort anyway. F22/SBD door kickers, JASSM, JASSM-ER, Navy Tomahawk, decoys, etc etc etc. I think there are a lot of mission profiles that can be done OK with X-45, X-47 platforms switched into the autonimous mode. The one advatage on that first night is to reduce risk to aircrew.

The stress IMO is I think you can do all the missions needed ( USAF wide anyway ) by not going with JSF.

The connection was easy to make. Arthur having actually seen those dangerous new wave Russian killing machines and you looking to get out some hot info on RuAF tech to tell the truth to the great unwashed under an assumed name. Plus all the religous stuff is good cover too ,as the FBI is less likely to burn down religous wackos these days ( remember Waco ) 😀 😮 :p

I’ve seen all the episodes to the XFiles so I know all this stuff. You can’t fool me. 😎

Be nice if the USAF end of JSF was reduced or totally eliminated. USN I can see needs some. USMC ? Sometimes I wonder.

The reason I say this about USAF is that they should leap ahead and put more stress on X-45 X-47 UCAV work. As it is now, USAF will have in the near future, numbers of JASSM, and JASSM-ER, B-2, F-22, combined with all the other nasty all weather PGMs, I just don’t see a need to use “new” technology and continue the old cycle of manned strike / sustainment costs for years on this including the nutty idea of replacing the F-16 on almost a 1:1 basis. Yes manned airpower will still be around. I just think for USAF, that a little more look at how sustainment costs over the long haul for lots of manned platforms for something like JSF…. $$$. For USAF, not having JSF would put more funds in the pocket to get the F-22 numbers up a bit more and spend money on other non-sexy things like some kind of transformation / restructering of tankers etc. that made $$$ sense. USAF without the JSF and more stress on X-45, X-47 type of UCAV, including all the other goodies is plenty of force. Especially if Iraq is our last “big” look at expeditionary warfare, which I think by now the politicians have had their fill. In the long run it is cheaper to sustain a bunch of UCAVs stored in boxes than it is a 30 year program of manned strike jets and all the $$$ over years that involves.
