Ah, so it is inconvenient, therefore we should abandon a a self-governing Overseas Territory of the United Kingdom, against the wishes of its citizens?

Presumably we then give Gibraltar to the Spanish, the Channel Islands to the French, and Anglesey to whoever takes a fancy to it?

    Moggy

Sorry Moggy, I should have made my statement more clear. I meant rid the islands of our forces, or maybe just leave a shadow unit there.

    David,

I’m aware it’s a cushy one, I still serve:rolleyes: and have visited on occasion.

I did get a degree of “I’m a smart alec” in the book, but the point remain the same, Blue fox wasn’t given the credit it deserved….. and as for the Flag deciding on how a Squadron should perform its task…… unthinkable!

PPRUNE, as with all forums, is a matter of opinion, and it’s all too easy to jump on the band wagen.

Thanks for the (mature) comments to date.

Can anyone name the oldest airworthy jet powered aircraft in the world?

I think it is Golden Apple Operation’s F-86A Sabre (G-SABR) based at Duxford. It was built in late 1948 and entered service in April 1949.

Is there anything older? Must be AIRWORTHY, must be JET powered and must be the actual aircraft, not a representative of type.

Bonus question: what is the oldest AIRWORTHY jet trainer in the world?

Is it one of those Swiss jobbies (!) with the turbo prop, long nose and triple finned…..D&W or something like that? The target tugs…When were they built? Was it during WW2, and re-engined later on……???

Anyway, it’s all knickers in a knot with this post isn’t it?
I’m surprised folk are getting their knicks in a knot…….. or am I?
That poor CAD chappie, he’s been rebuked by even the most calm of people, he’ll NEVER be back. You should be ashamed……

    Sadsack,

If it means SO much for you to go into the aircraft, then ask.

Putting it bluntly, it takes ONE item of FOD to KILL.

A control restriction during flight (not neccessarily detected on the ground) will result in at least a mild panic for the pilot, at worst it’ll kill many people. I know (unfortunately from experience) how guilt ridden it could make you feel if you left something in the cockpit. Fortunately for me, my experience ended without incident after I made the call to get the (highly aerobatic) aircraft back down before its (public) display was commenced. On a connected note…..

The same consideration should be given to anyone carrying out a flight servicing of a “live” aeroplane. Don’t disturb them, they NEED FULL COMMITMENT TO THE JOB IN HAND. I cannot over emphasise this.

    That’ll do.

I think it was the Broussard. At around the same time, the Plane Sailing Pilatus P2 was blown into the fence and was badly damaged; it never flew again. 🙁

Undoubtedly it was the Broussard, I have an old copy of Aeroplane magazine detailing the incident, but just can’t lay my hands on it at the moment.

Thank you all for your comments. My mother has pictures of my Dad holding me, as a baby, in front of the Shack in Sep 73, and Duxford has been at least an annual pilgrimage ever since!

I wasn’t aware of the Gatwick museum, let alone its Shackletons!!!

I’ll google it later, but does anyone have images??

From what I have heard and read, she is destined to go indoors but minus wings??

    Cheers Peter.

    But minus wings, and why…..?

Or is it to free up a pair of (revenue earning) Griffons?

Had a look at SL721 in Canada in 2002 when we landed the Sparrows for fuel.

I “made like a swastika” to get to see it, after I’d fueled me jet.

Nice Spit, and the engineer was a gent….

    …..”Want to sit in it?”

“No thanks, I’ve not the time”

Then onto Halifax for tea and medals (or a few “beers”)!

…and I was able to reassure him, shortly before he passed away.

    Mark

Which must mean that……. TE311’s wings should be getting lots of attention as we speak, :dev2:

Come on AA, get on with it!!!!

    Turretboy,

I’m very happy with the notice that is just visible on picture one. Obviously aimed at the “Doubting Thomas” fraternity!

    Great work, keep it up!

    TE311

    Hi All,

I went along to BBMF yesterday and had a look at TE311 up close. Despite a personal wish for this aeroplane to appear in an early post war silver scheme, I have to say that the 74 Sqn colours look good, really good!

Since posting the scheme on this forum, Fluffy has received further info on the exact camouflage pattern used on the Spitfire that TE311 is to represent, and has noted that the grey/green demarkation lines on the fuselage are ‘out’ in a couple of places. This, I believe, will be corrected.

The national insignia looks really good, the blue is strong (as it should be) but the red seems a little pinkish to my eye……HOWEVER it is to be checked by an outside agency for authenticity.

What needs to happen to this project now (and I speak with personal opinion, and in no way represent any opinion expressed by BBMF personnel), is that the wings need to be completed asap, enabling heavy progress to be made.

Regarding the matt scheme, just think how it will look at the end of the first display season……rather dirty, stained and a little weary…..just like a wartime Spitfire in fact! Please BBMF, don’t take that god awful cleaning solution to it,ever! It’ll only make it shiney!

    Regards

    BWB,

Thank you for reminding me about another splendid sympathetic resto…….I refer of course to TFC’s Spit XVIII.

I’m aware of it’s past and what it was (a “flier”, but only to a passable standard), but what superb work Fred and Mike are putting into her.

    Well done you chaps!:D
