I have heard a rumour (and we all know how dangerous they can be) that G-ACSS may be operated from Duxford for the remainder of the display season, presumably because of the availability of a choice of hard or grass runway and a lot more space. Can anyone confirm or rebut this ?

I asked a volunteer this at the last evening display, and he said that it would operate from Old Warden.

Bristol Freighter without a shadow of a doubt for me. Having been loosely involved with at least three abortive plans to bring a Bristol Freighter to the UK, I can say that it is extremely difficult without a wealthy benfactor. In all cases it came down to cash as the primary issue. In one case, there was a public appeal for cash, but not enough was forthcoming. This is not helped by the hulks being ever so slightly overvalued. Logistically, transporting a dismantled Biffo as deck cargo presents its own problems. Still, I would never say never; with the right set of circumstances it could still happen, maybe not any time soon though. Can I just say to all those that have made comments on this thread, when the next appeal comes around, please remember what you say here!

The article itself is quite good -one slight error is missing the British built survivor out which is the only surviving example from the Bristol U.K run.

David – I haven’t had a chance to read the article yet, but can you explain further your comment? As far as I am aware there are no surviving British built Beauforts, and I’d be interested to find out if I’m wrong.
    Sorry of the slight digression.

Lovely to see that photo, I have a similar one taken from the terminal just below that position. I believe it flew in to show that Glasgow could now take larger airliners after a runway extension. The date I have is 17th September 1972, which was after the Farnborough Show. I remember seeing it flying over the house, then rushing to the airport to see it on the ground.

I can also add that I’ve had no response to an email I sent a few weeks back.

How about a single seat Hunter on a lorry heading west on the M4 between J16 and J17 on Wednesday (7/3) morning. Later mentioned on the Cardiff and St.Athan blog as arriving at St.Athan, possibly G-EGHH. I am sure a certain member of this forum will be able to confirm in due course.

    pbrandfo,
My information is that 16 came off the production line as Met Mk.3s, but the final equipment fit may well have been with 19MU at Saint Athan. Six did indeed go to 1301 Flight in 1949 – VS817, VS820, VS821, VS822, VS823 and VS824. Of the remaining 10, one went to A&AEE for performance and radio trials and preparation of pilots notes (VS818), one was retained at Filton for manufacturer trials (VS819) – I presume both of these had their equipment fitted at Filton. Another, VS825, went to APC Acklington in 1952 for ASV Mk.13B trials. The others (VS826 to VS832) went from Filton to 19MU for storage, and were eventually joined by VS818, VS819 and VS825.

In addition RH763 (a TF Mk.1) was used to test meteorological equipment both at Filton and at Boscombe Down, but wasn’t actually converted to a Met Mk.3.

All 1301 Brigands returned to the UK in December 1951 or January 1952 for storage back at Saint Athan, apart from VS820 which was scrapped in Negombo. All remaining 15 were sold as scrap between 1953 and 1955.

VS824 was damaged in a flying accident 19/07/1949, but was back with 1301 Flight 02/04/1951, so that may well have been the one that had the heavy landing. My father did his national service on Brigands with 1301 Flight, and he has recounted a similar story about the heavy landing – I’ll PM you later!

The locals did a nice job of starting the restoration but guess the USAF had to step in and finish it.

I had a guided tour of the restoration in a hangar at Millington, TN in 2004 and the team there were doing a fantastic job of restoring the B-17. I firmly believe there was no need for the USAFM to ‘reclaim’ it to finish the job at Dayton. They had a very well equipped and well funded operation in Memphis, and there is no better place for her to be. Granted there was some corrosion after many years in the open and under a tent, but she wouldn’t have been put back in that situation after the restoration.

I disagree, I think it’s a VERY sexy aircraft with all the curves and bumps in the right place and two big Bristols to boot!;)
Much rather see one of these flying to a certain ‘tin triangle’!

A reply to something I said over two years ago! Don’t get me wrong – Biffos are very sexy. What I think I meant at the time was that it was not ‘sexy’ in terms of capturing the interest of the man in the street, sponsors etc in order to return one to the UK. We came very very close a few years back, on different occasions, but it was difficult to generate sufficient funds.

Here’s an idea, move Bristol Airport to Filton from its home way out of the city at Lulsgate Bottom. There is the railway which runs through the site with direct access to the Bristol-Cardiff mainline and the mainline to London via Parkway and reasonable access to the M4 and M5.

Ok there isn’t room to expand but that doesn’t exactly exist at Lulsgate with the up & down topography and the transport links to there are not very good.

Been thought of before I’m afraid. In addition to the benefits you listed, there is also the fact Lulsgate is frequently fogbound whilst Filton is clear. In the 1990s BAe planned to open Filton up to commercial traffic, but there were so many objections from the residents that they gave up. Victim of their own success – the factory grew so much during WW2 (the biggest aircraft factory in Europe) that many housing estates were built around the area. These are now populated by people who don’t really see the benefits of Filton Airport.

I guess he was with 501 Sqn, which left Filton in November 1939 for Tangmere.

501 moved from Hawker Harts to Hurricanes in March 1939. Wikipedia states that 501 also used Avro Tutors for training from Jan 1936 to October 1939. That could certainly be the 501 hangar at Filton. Looking forward to seeing any more you may have!
