Oh yes there are!…(see also the posting from Mackerel in the ‘Spotted’ thread).

Seems to be for a forthcoming TV prog involving MH434 up against one of the Red Bull air race ‘Extras’.

Pylon erected at Sandown airport, mucho air to air stuff with heli-telly equipped choppers, around the island, over the Needles etc.

All will be revealed in due course no doubt.

Any truth in the story that Cessna so ‘named’ the 336, paying lip-service to the 335 from Dornier???

    Hi there,
Industrial Blasting not really recommended for such an airframe if it is a flyer? Would really need the attention of a proper paint shop facility, careful stripping, cleaning, (inspection) and priming / painting etc.

If a static only yes get it blasted, but it would then need painting PDQ, or it will just got rusty PDQ!

G-ADTD is listed in the Putnam British Racing & Record Breaking A/C book as an entrant in the 1954 Kings Cup race held at Baginton (June 18-19), so might be the location.

Though looking through the pages ‘DTD, flown by Mr.Marler took part in many events during this period…came in 4th at an event at Denham in August of 54.

Seriously, regardless of the species of creature, I suspect that the location is Mudros in the Aegean. The RNAS did operate SS airships from this location and it would tie in with the style of dress being worn.

    Hi Martin,
A serious voice at last many thanks for your input. This gives me a starting point, will see what I can dig up re Mudros.

Should have known better than to mention the pussy cat, not many lions etc up that end of the Aegean as far as I am aware!

Don’t know Chumpy – wonder what the aircraft is landing in the background of the first shot. It’s low-wing (so not another Ensign) but I can’t make out whether it has two or four engines – DC2??

    Roger Smith.

Roger…Looks to be a Bloch 220,… large F visible of fin had I not seen this would have said a DC2 also.

Chumpy, another great shot – got any more? I have been trying to study the two pics to see if they are of the same grouping taken from different positions but probably not. I wonder if the second pic was at Whitchurch rather than Croydon?

    Roger Smith

    Hi Roger,
I reckon it is Croydon in both shots, again did some close squinting and can sort of make sense of it all. The second shot taken from the left of the ‘group photo’.

I have a couple more that look to be taken the same day, maybe some sort of event / open day. Even in those far off care-free days unusual to have all those bods ‘air-side’.
Maybe sheltering from a drop of rain under the Ensign wing, certainly something a bit wet dripping on the tyre!

Any offers as to whats going on???

    That’s a great picture chumpy.

It (or one from the same position) has appeared in print several times. I think there are four AW.27s in shot (along with all the other pre-war airliners).

    Roger Smith.

Had a close squint at the snap, five AW27s visible DST, W, Y, Z plus one other DS?

Here is another from the same set, with what looks to be DSR undergoing a bit of prop / engine work.
…Anyone hazard a guess as to what year it might be?

As an alternative to all those previously mentioned nasty solvents, CAREFUL application of a heat gun helps to loosen the grip of PRC. Keep in mind the possible annealing effect on aircraft alloys, dont set fire to the stuff like when you are trying to strip the paint off household woodwork..Beware of fumes etc

At the end of the day elbow grease lots of scrubbing, no easy way..appalling stuff. Only comes off easily when you are trying to seal a leak in a far corner of a fuel tank!
