I remember the BIA Herald wheels up ‘take off’. I worked in ATC from 1975 to mid 1979 so it occurred sometime in that window. I was in the radar room when the alarm went down, looked through the venetian blinds covering the window and saw this Herald sitting on the runway!
Apparently the crew forgot to select take off flap, hauled it off the ground and as soon as it airborne it sunk back down again. No injuries and being a Herald the pax just stepped out onto the runway.
Ah if I had seen it I guess it wasnt you.
Must of been crazy crossing the Alps in that!:DBy the way, I think the F1 BAe 146 in your pic is G-OFOM which was white. 🙂
Still is white and still operated by F1, but more of a hangar queen and not used as frequently as G-OFOA
How about another 3 engine classic?

Taken at a Farnborough show.
Hmmm!
High speed Comet?

..or is it being moved to the fire training area by the old tower (the only tower in my day) because it was taking up valuable parking space?
Great oldies there,im interested in the CAAC Tripod at LHR any idea on a date??
Dan-Air 707 G-BEAF…as requested by Vino
Splendid. When I worked at Gatwick back in the 70’s there was a long haul Dan 707 that was nicknamed ‘The Torrey Canyon’ (after a fabled oil tanker wreck of the 60’s) that used to get airborne thanks to the curvature of the earth. Can’t remember the destination any more but could have been direct South America.
Love the Caledonian 707’s. Anyone got the old Dan Air 707?
Anyone remember…….?

Sorry to take this away from the UK but…..

Does anyone like Convair 580’s? I have a few going spare.
Marana Air Park September 1975
I still like to see Tridents with red boxes on the tails…..

Ah! The roof of the Queens Building at Heathrow. Always busy with the public soaking up the atmosphere (and burnt jet fuel fumes)
Loving these pics People, i love seeing photos of Airuk, BIA, etc etc all good stuff! 😀 😀
You might like a bit of BAF then……

For comparison here is G-BEYF at Gatwick in the mid 1970’s. Spot the difference!

As the era we are looking at on this thread is a bit later than my previous posts, I offer something from the mid 70’s

OK I have edited it to take out the downslope and tidy up the picture a bit. Still getting the hang of photo editing software!
Picture taken at Gatwick somewhere between 1975 and 1979, any offers?

Your pictures are from my favourite era. The last picture is interesting to me as there is a Hermes in the background. Was it taken at southend?
Most publications have that aircraft scrapped at STN, but it doesn’t look to well in this shot!
Darren. Hopefully they repaired that 707 in Chile!
The photos were taken at Southend in either 1962 or 1963. the memory fades.
As a youngster the future importance of such machines as the Hermes in the background were lost to me, and the quality of the pictures even less important. I have a number of boxes of 35mm slides that I will scan when time permits. Most are not well framed, or taken through windows by a child, but do provide some atmosphere of the times.
My collection crosses through the 60’s into the 80’s.
Maybe the discolouration of the slides is a factor of their age.

How about Heathrow in the 60’s?

Any tips about how to get rid of the blue tinge the slide scanner is giving?

Does this count as an ‘oldie’.
Just bought a slide scanner and opened up the archive on 35mm slide!
Sorry about the quality…….a very young ‘vino collapso’ taking a photo through glass at Southend in 196?

Cor that takes me back a bit!! I flew that old Rallye G-AVPK with a friend up to Sunderland from Biggin one New Years day back in 1980 or 81. (Havent got my logs to hand at the moment) Delivering it to a local group after an overhaul and re-paint.
Darn sight faster coming home on the Intercity 125 train !!
