Cost versus Information depends of what you are looking for and what period.
If you want details between 1918 and Sept 1939 then the £3.50 download is usually the best value.
For the fee you get both F540 and F541 if they exist and a variable number of pages depending in the activity of the squadron (eg 100 to 800+)
Post Sept 1939 the £3.50 download is usually for 1 month of Form 540 and £3.50 for the corresponding month of F541.
Look to down load over 7 £3.50 pdfs from one AIR 27 files then the cheaper route is to get an estimate for CD/DVD supply of the complete AIR27 file as digital images.
This is £20 per file plus £2.40 ish UK first class postage.
Typically an AIR27 file covers a year of both F540 and F541.
If you are looking for just one operation and can get to Kew then individual page printout will beat the £3.50 download cost.
A typical family research for one bomber crew at a squadron is usually 6 to 8 months of pages.
Summary.
£3.50
Comes all bundled in one pdf file
Supplied as usually either F540 or F541
Pre war can cover several years and amount to many pages in the pdf
Delivery same day
£20
Supplied as individual jpg images
Both F540 and F541 supplied
Covers 1 yesr or more period
Delivery approx 1 week after acceptance of online quote

Hi Ann,
If you would like to confirm your father’s name here I’ll have a look to see if i have anything on him.
No.1 AACU was split into a large number of lettered flights, each based at a different location round the UK coast.

A family friend who is now an Old, Bold pilot described his wheels up at Valley sometime in the late 50s/60s.
He said as the aircraft sank lower, more and more noise was generated until it peaked, as he was sliding along with everything in contact.
With great feeling he stressed that when it stopped and all was silent – do not immediately get out – just sit and savour the silence – as it will be the last you will hear for months as every armchair expert from the Groupie to the mess cat will insist you listen to their view of what you should have done.

If the lifeboat number is 836 then it was the very last MkIII built by Saunders Roe and was initially assigned to No.47 MU.
Engine should be 12hp Vincent HRD.

Never disputed the CWGC burial.
Just quoted the entry in the private diary to show that no body was recovered from the wreck by the diver at the date given.
The RNLI and Salvage Diver records are part of my previous background research on this loss.
All Form 78 will give is presumed date of loss. Form 1180 links MACFADZEAN with W9179 and will do the same for the remaining aircraft but I am still waiting to order the film reels.
The balance of probability is W9179 in sea at Amble but this needs to be proved.
Too many published lists being quoted as fact but very little actual fact behind them.

Paul,
The jury is still out on what, where and who
There is a reasonable amount of supporting info for a Hurricane lost off Amble on this day but nothing yet to confirm serial
MARCH 27TH. – AMBLE, NORTHUMBERLAND.
A Hurricane aeroplane had crashed into the sea, but only wreckage was found. – Rewards, £11 8s.
(Source: RNLI Records of Service 1939-46)
From diary of Brass Hat diver Ken Lucas
27th March
Worked on S. Brake. Skip called about Hurricane crash at Amble.
28th March
Skip and Tom left for Amble. Ken returned from Scotland.
29th March
Left with lorry for Amble, arrived 1900 hours.
30th March
Stayed at RAF camp. Skip and Tom arrived. Strong westerly winds, no boats out.
31st March/1st April
Winds continue. No boats out. We all stay in camp.
2nd April
Winds dropping. Arrangements made for next morning. We all go to dance.
3rd April
We all leave jetty 0700 hours for wreck. No body there. Lorry left for Grimsby
All that ORB confirms is two pilots killed but lists no serials.
