Aha! Different coaming on the RH/port side then: that seals it!
Cockpit coamings quite different; hence my request. Still not convinced it’s a DH.9a trainer: photos show a semi-circular side elevation to the DH.9a front cockpit coaming – quite different to the OP photo. So again – any photo comparison?
Does anyone have a good comparison shot of a DH.9a trainer?
So not a DH.9; is the DH.9a any different? So far the raised rear cockpit seems to be the defining feature.
Forget the people that could be hurt or the priceless artefacts that could be burnt – think of the pollution! :applause:
Irrespective of our priorities, and with the collapse of global ecosystems foremost in the news, the effects of pollution and related environmental issues make our hobby seem very, very trivial. We need to put things in perspective.
John Blake! That’s a blast from the past. I can remember his commentaries now. Regarding the ‘QED’ at Biggin Hill in 1979 I am sure some may say that was reckless and irresponsible. Not me however. I loved Don Bullock’s displays.
Incidentally I am loving the malapropisms in this thread!
Not sold yet, so who knows what it will sell for.
Let’s not forget that display restrictions have also pushed aircraft farther and farther away. An airshow highlight for me was the RCAF ‘Red Indians’ F-104 show starter where the narrator would ask the crowd to look to their front while a gaggle of very low-level Starfighters would zoom at high speed from crowd rear. I saw many an ice cream dropped. I doubt we’ll ever see the like of that. Or gaggles of 104s of course. Plus there were LOADS of airshows, big and small.
For me the variety is still there, but the balance has changed: we had fewer warbirds in the 70s when I started going, and yes we’ve lost the Lightnings, Vulcans, SR-71s etc; but we still have some oldie show-stoppers like the U-2 (sadly not often enough) and B-52 (sadly static usually) and some of the newbies are pretty cool too – V-22, F-22 and F-35 for a start. Plus we never saw anything Eastern Bloc at European shows back then either. Maybe we’ll also get another Bear at RIAT before they go out of service or something from China? Bear in mind that most of the aforementioned easily qualify as warbirds too!
So better back then? Yes – undoubtedly in terms of actual flying displays and contemporary hardware. But a lot of modern shows have evolved into something different and that’s not necessarily a bad thing.
Very nice: brings back memories of Ray Hanna in MH434 all those years ago.
Reported as C-GJKM, damage assessed as dbr.
Thanks for the update – love these little beauties.
PS: It’s ‘its’ not ‘it’s’.
Unlikely to be related to Game Warden (which was a US Navy operation rather than an exercise). Most likely a coincidental overflight of a Butterworth-based aircraft?
Keep plugging with RAFM: they will answer but sometimes get sidelined with various exhibitions etc.
Glad I didn’t waste my time then! 🙂
Covered on a Wings Over New Zealand forum, with photos. I contacted the museum with some period photos and information but they were very dismissive so I decided my efforts were best spent elsewhere.
