Yes we have the Signal Mortar mount (as per initial post); then the Motley MG mount from posts #4 and #8; and thirdly is the Stork mount (post 12), which is also an MG mount.

we found something similar at Hunsdon, a former nightfighter airfield, we thought it was either a Motley mount or a windsock mount…

Yours is an MG mount: as you can see from my post #4 above – right next to a pill box so more likely to be MG than windsock; and seen at other locations next to pill boxes.

austernj673 and Southern Air99 have posted something quite different (well OK similar but different).

I’d really like to know what the mortar looked like!

Well I’ll be! I’ll post the photos of the Clyffe Pypard one later if I can.

EDIT: found it: it differs in some respects, so maybe this one is an MG mount and not like yours after all?

It looks too hefty to be a signal mortar, plus non-adjustable for wind etc. I’d suggest it’s the base for an MG, having seen similar before – I think there is one extant at Clyffe Pypard.

Good news: shame about the p!ss-poor punctuation…

Well that is rather an exaggeration. The P.1121 is a partly constructed hulk consisting of a centre fuselage shell, a cockpit shell and one wing only partly skinned. It is not my idea of easy to finish off. Anyway what would be the point, it is an accurate representation of its history as it stands.

I fully agree: if someone wants to build a replica then fine. But why would you “finish off” a valuable set of artefacts which were never complete in period? I does however deserve an inspired restoration and display.

But this is off-topic: let’s hope that the Cairns Belfast has earned a stay of execution.

I did think Old Sarum, but Yeadon could well be.

Nice one: some proper news on a day of severe navel gazing and ill-informed bullsh!t.

Good luck in your endeavours and hope to see it one day!

According to the ever-reliable TV news, two hangars are slated for conversion to lab/test facilities by year’s end. I also wonder if JD’s Global Express might fit in?

If so then the chances of the runway staying open could be better than most other options…

Good work Beermat: many would keep it all to themselves (like many a pilot’s logbook) or worse still place it on Fleabay.

I have in the past referred to transcriptions of this diary and can attest to its worth in real (not monetary) terms.

TNA isn’t really the correct place: they deal with official records handed down by the AHB, MOD etc, rather than personal accounts. I’m also not sure how/if TNA deals with loans/donations in the same way as RAFM.

In praise of the RAF Museum, I have used their archives many times, and unlike many museums (not just aviation), the RAFM archiving cannot be faulted: documents are easy to find and in one instance whilst doing research on the HP.42, they were able to locate log books from those who flew them in RAF service, so their cataloguing system is pretty impressive! I doubt many museums would be able to do that.

RAFM also holds copied documents, so I’d suggest lodging a copy with RAFM and placing the original maybe somewhere that it would be on public view. However, just bear in mind security when placing the primary document with a museum.

RAF Museum: it would then be accessible to researchers.

For my part, I’ve always made contributions gratis and those who contribute to my titles treat it in the same way. A picture credit goes a long way!

I’ll see if I have anything.
