Anyone see this today? It’s a cartoon about Jiro Hirokoshi the designer of the Mitsubishi Zero! (No joke!!)

    Cartoon??!!! Jeesus.

A great piece of animation, as are all Studio Ghibli films.

I provided bed and lodgings, checked out the original Liberty Girl, fitted a better long range fuel system, did a complete engine change, patted him on the back and sent him on his way to the next prang in Japan when he was here in New Zealand. all I can say is “Good on Ya Morrie, go for it” The world is a better place and less boring by having a few eccentrics like Maurice. For the Naysayers that looks to be standard J3 shock strut assemblies, not bush engineering, and yes, they do fail.

    Fully agree.

But why Spitfires and why WW2? There are plenty of folks from the Cold War era who are passing away and their stories should also be told…

And since when does Flypast have anything verified by an independent researcher?

I have been a reader since (ironically) the issue reporting on the 72 Spitfires extant in the UK (at the time, 1982 IIRC). Mostly because FP was very much into the aviation archa…… (well that name is also not to be mentioned here) at the time. Which made me join a recovery group etc. But since Ken Delve became editor the quality went downhill. FP still keeps the opinion alive that only Spitfires and Lancasters (and later Vulcans) mattered and the rest were less important. Nowadays I buy the magazine as a force of habit, while I have a subscription for Aeroplane which I enjoy very much.

Sadly FP has managed to place itself on most mainstream news stands and it’s meant that for Joe Public – end especially those keen to learn about historic aviation – they are faced with mostly bland re-hashing of the same old same old. It’s a bit like Radio 1 and McDonalds.

Hopefully folks will look further and not accept bland as the norm.

But yes – I take your point about the S-word: I’ll try to post some esoteric stuff if I can.

Hangar is Extra-Over I think (UK only?)

    Airmen in temperate (UK/European?) dress.

Airfield looks UK to me too, as does what we can see of the building (Crittall-type windows etc). However the window handle doesn’t look like Crittall or of a type I recognise from period military buildings.

Chipping Warden is the one for me. the high ground in the background does it.
Must of been taken pretty much at mid day as no shadows cast, we could be looking EAST.
There is possibly a road in the background with the rising ground behind.

We need Matt Poole here he works things out very quickly

Sorry I ofn’t a clue, so I can’t say whether it must “of” or not… But if I of got a clue I’ll let you know.

Should of, would of could of I guess.

Merry Christmas and let’s hope 2017 brings better grammar/spell checks.

Apologies for the long post, but looks like 99-odd files to explore!

I think it might be Amelia.

    Or a Turkish Fw-190.

    Merry Christmas!

    Brian,

I’ll see the car & driver a few times in 2017 I’m sure: I’ll broach the subject if you like.

Thanks gents, for your kind words. They make the toil worth while, after one has “given it away” having lived with it for so long. I chickened-out on making a dummy Claudel Hobson Carb when delivery date loomed and exhausts were still to do.
I could add it later, but I have a pressing commitment to get data together to build a running 1909 J.A.P. 35hp V-8 ohv aero engine. It’s a simpler engine ,but reference motors are few (four) and owners/guardians very shy about letting one measure things(even externally.Back to the Renault….when I got to the first build-up of the 839 parts(inc fasteners) the challenge was indeed becoming “enjoyable”. A Clerget (for the Museum’s Camel ) was going to be next, but I decided I should let another volunteer have a go, or tidy up the replica that is installed at the moment.

Have seen one of the V8 JAP’s running: works very impressively in a small car!

That looks fantastic Brian, well done, did you enjoy the challenge, and would you make another ?

    How about a Gnome next?

Please post some more photos when you get a chance

    Jules

Well my hat is off to you all: replica or not, the workmanship that has gone into that aircraft is world-standard.

By the way I’d quite like one of those Renaults for my living room! Didn’t by chance have any bits left over?

So obvious question – setting the A&AEE Harvards etc aside, is it the longest-serving type?

Edit: Canberra still gets it by the looks.

Yes indeed. Mr Ewen was buzzing around Hendon, where he ran the W.H. Ewen flight school, in a Cauldron…

He must have been hot stuff! Especially helpful in a pea-souper. Don’t ask me Witch one though.
