    gbend,

Welcome. I hope I don’t muddy the waters, but as soon as I saw your post, I thought, “I know that one” – but on looking at your details I see it appears to be a different accident!

So in case your cockpit glazing is Spitfire and not Hurricane, maybe maybe your crash piece comes from a 25th June 1944 crash? – Flt Lt O’Callaghan ‘Blue 1’ was killed whilst flying Spitfire Vb AB975 AV-A of 277 Sqn. The ORB for that date says,

“Weather dull with tendency to rain. It was with deep regret that news was received in late afternoon stating that Fg Off FGD O’Callaghan was missing from operations and it transpired later that his aircraft crashed at Oborne near Sherborne, Dorset resulting in his untimely death. Fg Off FGD O’Callaghan was most popular and was held in high esteem by his fellow pilots and crews in the squadron. The squadron has lost not only a conscientious pilot but an officer of highest ideals”.

Serendipitously my family are from Longburton, and though I’ve been there, I can’t recall how close Oborne might be to the locations you talk about.

I have a photo and other details of O’Callaghan if you’re interested.

    Try The Tuskegee Airmen instead.

Will do: thanks for the suggestion.

    That’s the one. Good wasn’t it. 😀

Loved it! I went three times.

Oh hang on. In fact that’s not quite right: I *legally* downloaded it, watched the first 10 minutes, got bored, fast-forwarded a few times, realised it was the same all the way through and gave up.

Anyone watch Red Tails?Lot of racist words in it and historically correct and I think well handled being shown in the movie.

The same Red Tails which was generally panned by aviation enthusiasts and described by Film Citic website Rotten Tomatoes as, suffering from, “…one-dimensional characters, corny dialogue, and heaps of clichés”?

I did look at this thread a few times, just in case it might contain some news about the film. In fairness it does have the few odd bits, so thanks for those.

But, though even I would admit to being immature at times, I can’t believe all this BS about the dog’s name!

It’s like kids saying ‘bugg*r’ and sniggering about it. Who really cares about the dog? I was upset when it was run-over in the original film – but then I was probably aged 8 at the time. I never remembered the dog’s name, and that’s how important that aspect is to the story of the Dambusters.

Rather than banging on about the bloody dog, maybe we can either pull the plug on this thread or create a new category for those who want to snigger about rude words.

More mysterious is that despite numerous ‘witnesses’, no-one managed to get a photo of it!

Oh dear. This thread has drifted a bit.

I was going to temper the ‘realism’ debate by saying that in the case of one rather famous (deceased) BoB pilot, all the film and written works I’ve seen on the man have portrayed him as a decent, humble hero.

But all those I’ve spoken to who actually fought with him or had to maintain his aircraft, thought he was an absolute @rse.

Realism is relative and I look forward to Peter Jackson’s film with an open mind. I’ll judge its merit after I’ve given it a fair chance.

So looking closely at Sabrejet’s photos (many thanks Sabrejet!) am I right in thinking that the U/C legs and undercarriage bays are painted white?

Also (paging Mike J here…sorry to be a pest) apart from the quilted lining and rear jump seat, was the cockpit fairly standard or was there a lot of modern instrumentation? Obviously it looks as though there was gunsight fitted. My queries are for the early 80’s period.

Thanks all…enjoying the thread so far.

    Best regards;
    Steve

Yes – legs and bays white, doors polished aluminium. I have a few more which I’ll post tonight. Glad they are of help.

And pretty bloody good they are, too.

I really wish, though, that he would do a WW1 film at some point…!

Fully agree! And not something about scout squadrons either – how about something in-depth and meaningful related to art obs?

In the meantime I shall continue to watch Biggles every time it’s on Film 4. Now there is an atrocious film!

Armstrong-Siddeley’s Mamba test bed. A-S later did the Twin Mamba, which went on to greater things in the Gannet.

Great shots – thanks for posting!

Edit: just realised if it’s Hucknall then those are Darts, not Mambas (which I’d guess would have been tested mainly at Baginton?).
