I still think we’ve missed a few absolute classics:
The Cain Mutiny
Mr Roberts
M*A*S*H
Casablanca
Pearl Harbour
Sorry couldn’t resist
Ebay will always say that they will not disclose what action (if any) will be taken; I have reported dozens of items, but the process is drop down menu’s that never quite say what you want, i.e this item is fake or this seller is bogus etc.
So even the airfield is closed then? can you not still have flybys; the B17 came right over us last Saturday (twice) not much higher than at a show don’t think it counted as a display.
“The longest day” certainly felt like it when I last watched it and in black and white! Purple heart? the one where Audi Murphy played himself; you don’t see this on the telly anymore, so having not seen it since I was a kid, I can’t say if it was any good.
Any pictures of the finished articles?
I really want to like “First of the few”, it has after all got David Niven and Leslie Howard, but the glaring inaccuracies make me cringe.
I would echo the sentiments of Tangmere1940, and personally would like to see this thread cleaned up, so it may run unhindered by baggage.
On of my top 3 aviation movies after Spirit of St. Louis and Island in the Sky. Thought Susannah York was very attractive in 1968(she passed away a couple of years ago). One of the worse GB aviation movies or series was Piece of Cake.
How can you not like piece of cake, it had an American in it and everything; seriously I really like that mini series.
What about “the sea shall not have them”
I would echo the sentiments of those with more experience “on type” it is a massive undertaking, to build anything that will remotely approximate a Hurricane, but to work from the original drawings, will (in my opinion) make that almost impossible without the specialist tooling;on the positive side the basic tube structure can be welded rather than joined with the myriad of different plates, and periodically these welded fuselage come up for sale.
I’d like to see that, especially if they both have to wear the make-up……….
Supermarine Engineering are doing the work, they have been working on it on and off for over 10 years; they have an annual fund raiser aimed at “big business” in the area, organised by a local councillor. (I think)
I remember maybe 20 years ago they were building a replica engine at one of the Welsh railway museums, and someone found the forward/reversing lever, whereupon it was declared a restoration!
There will always be to sides to this; those who are connected in some way financially to the production of new build air frames, and those enthusiasts that don’t particularly like the wool being pulled over their eyes with regards to history and provenance.
The BBMF have in the past paid less attention to the originality of some of their A/C, but have in recent years worked hard at redressing that issue; notwithstanding this, their Mk2a is still seen by many as one of the most original airworthy Spitfires.
I has always been said that this state of affairs (regarding originality) has come about because of the way that the CAA views rebuilds versus new builds, but times they are a changing, and with the virtual collapse of the airshow industry in the UK, it begs the question in this current climate how many more will be built/ (sorry rebuilt)
Well not damned if he doesn’t Malcolm, this forum has functioned perfectly well without his input or his interfering recently.
It was reopened by Moggy with the words “Oh Dear” a phrase I hear all the time from respected broadcasters reporting the facts, and the irony of saying “I’ll let mk12 have the last word”, whilst actually having the last word himself; needless to say that my post no less factual than the other replies was removed.
That actually looks like a cut down Ford axle driving the “fan”!
