“Allow cowards to say anything they want without being held to account”.

Were there many FW190’s at Dunkirk, or is that just a library picture?

I must have missed this the first time around, probably because we had just move and were without internet etc; it’s excellent it was saved and look forward to reading future updates on “her ” restoration.

When I look at the pictures of Implacable I’m utterly astounded that it was destroyed as late as 1949, it actually looks like a ghost ship, I guess now it is.

    The Germans winning?

The Battle of Britain was a defensive strategy; if you own the same bit of land at the battle’s end, you have achieved your objective.
From an offensive point of view, if you are in the same place as where you started before the battle, you have failed.

If the Battle of Britain were to be lost, that surely would have sealed Malta’s fate, and the North African campaign would never have taken place, thus Germany/ Italy would have owned the Mediterranean (from both sides), I think it unlikely that the Americans (many of Italian descent) would have invaded Italy on their own under those terms; Roosevelt hated de gualle, according to Churchill’s memoirs it was only Churchill that kept him from having de gaulle killed!

The Americans would have busied themselves with annihilating Japan, and left Europe to it’s own devices.

Might be worth remembering that a museums primary task is to preserve it’s exhibits, everything else is secondary.

The small amount of signage on most exhibits (not just Hendon) is barely equal to that found on an Airfix box, and as for interactive displays (when they are working) kids use them just to get more points than each other, the details such as “which mark of spitfire was manufactured in the highest numbers” are instantly forgotten, as they move on to the next screen, on the other hand if you were to start one up, and I don’t think they’d forget that in a hurray.

!Did everyone rush to criticise the IWM at Duxford after the rebuild of the Super Super hangar as much?”

Yes, in fact it’s still worth pointing out that they spent £29m on a building that was perfectly ok, and at the very least didn’t blow away at the first sign of winter.

There is much in common between the two museums, (and not ironically aeroplanes) they have both lost their way over the years, and have had a turn over of “management” and have become more corporate (as this would appear to be the only thing management know how to do) both have or are going to dispose of Key types of A/C that could help tell a story.

The main difference, is that DX isn’t free, and doesn’t pander to a local population; to slightly mis quote someone who runs an event that I take part in, “when the admission fee is so low, you have no control over type of people that come through the door”, so ( in the case of RAFM Hendon)you are basing your business model on artificially supported ground, i.e the govt subsidy to museums, that may change at any time; I know from discussions with friends there, that the car parking charge was the only way to make ends meet, and still receive the subsidy.

I believe it is very naïve to think that the obviously transient population of London is you key target audience/market.

I seem to recall some mention of making RAFM Hendon an open space, so that may well come about.

Perhaps they could name it the Battle of Britain hall; I don’t think the name is in use elsewhere…….

So in essence the RAFM Hendon will keep changing to accommodate the changing population of London? basically the museum is in the wrong place.

I seem to recall looking at the online catalogue, and there being a 20% buyers premium, even 10% is legalised theft, considering they still take their “traditional” cut from the seller; a recent Cheffins sale was 10% (+vat) both ends with a £35 catalogue that you needed for entry to the sale ground. (admits two)

“Most people are right handed so a clockwise swing (facing prop) is easiest !”

This may be true, and the most logical, but also the move from direct drive to a reduction drive, will turn a clockwise rotating engine (as viewed from the front) to anticlockwise rotation, unless an idler is used; as two gears are more compact than three, it is likely that changing the blade(s) was the easiest “fix”.

I seem to recall that some of this A/C was on the IOW for a while prior to it’s return to the Island to be rebuilt at AA; nice to see former forum member Steve Atkin (mkV) helping out with the paint work, both he and mk12 gone from the forum but neither are actually “late”.

No argument there, but it’s a bit like flying your Spitfire in England, damaging it, then packing it off to South Africa for repair…. if you can’t find a competent repairer in America then your not trying, and with the availability of old stock spares, manufacturers of new etc, it must be cheaper than shipping it all that way; still whatever floats your shipping container.
