Recently found out (the hard way) that ebay had raised their maximum final value fee from £70- to £250; I didn’t get any notification of this; (I did when they raised it from £40- to £70- a year or so ago) thievin’ bar stewards.

The reason people do it like that is the Bren carrier is probably tens of thousands in price, by the time ebay have bunged their fees etc on it the seller gets a huge bill, so you put it up as a rivet from it, that puts it on the site and into the market place for basically nothing, anyone interested contacts them and the deal is done off ebay with no additional charges etc that the seller would have to add to the final price to get the true value back. it just short cuts the system, no one is expected to bid on them.

Do you have this one, and more importantly is it any use to you?

It occurs to me that patching over a window doesn’t require stiffeners to be introduced, because the airframe has already been strengthened for the window; the C119 has numerous panelled over window apertures, all of them larger than the one on the Electra, and none of them stiffened, just a thicker gauge of metal.

Unless it has changed from my last visit the shop and café are entirely separate, the shop (in line with sound museum policy) is the way in and out of the site; I can sympathise with Jeepman, but I also know what it’s like to be the last man on site, and not only responsible for the security of the whole museum site, but mindful that you are on your own if anything untoward were to happen. (clearly not suggesting that in this case)

Common sense (remember that) dictates that it is pointless allowing entry to a museum site as a whole so close to closing, (obviously it takes hours to walk around) but a shop is a shop and even a last minute purchase can be of real value to a small museum; our own policy was to never have just one person alone on site at closing time, especially at this time of year.

Did they really need to move the wings forward to fit the larger engine because of CoG issues? the early Griffons were apparently shorter than the 2 stage Merlins; was there ever a proposal to fit the 60 series Merlin into the Hurricane?

As an aside I was quite alarmed to see the amount of lead carried in the tail of MH434 a few years ago!

The bank analogy occurred to me also, they have set business hours, but will also put someone on the door 15 minutes before close to stop people coming in; very frustrating if you have driven at breakneck speed to get there on time, in the knowledge that your transaction will only take a few minutes.

This forum has been guilty of “bashing” the Kent Battle of Britain museum in the past, very few people have stood up for them; perhaps a little balance is required.

I see from the picture that it has the hinged extensions on the U/C spats; was this more common than I thought?

It does look suspiciously like someone has been snipping out little patches from that panel, to use for an unspecified purpose very neat cuts (tin snips) and all in between the rivet lines ; probably turn up on ebay “from a private collection in London”

Whilst I can’t help you specifically, the attached image shows that they were still supplying spares in 1951; either that or Graham Adlam’s venture has been going longer than I thought!

Museum shops are really just opportunistic, that’s why they are part of the way out (of the building) in the same way that supermarkets have choccys and sweets by the till.

I do know that the shop manager does his best, but ultimately the stock carried must be governed by what they sell week in week out and the budget.

I am also slightly unsure as to why they have events at Hendon, as they never seem to grasp the bull by the horns; having attended the BoB weekend several times since ’08 there has been a decline in exhibitors, and the hospitality shown to them; in ’08 there was an all day buffet, tea and coffee on demand, and a hot meal and an alcoholic beverage during the evening, last year there was none of that, and this year there was no show at all, as apparently the budget didn’t run to it!

I think the firewall was asbestos millboard, and the cladding was 24 swg hope that helps in your identification.

I would suggest knowing your subject is more important than the workings of the museum; you don’t need to be passionate about the latter, but you really do with regards to the former.
Having done the museum thing, I found it incredibly frustrating, that fellow directors were completely in the dark with regards to the importance of the various exhibits within the museum, and when the inevitable subjects of duplication and revamping were tabled, many of the board members would look at removing a display item purely on it’s size and how many other items could replace it within the same floor area.
