There is something of a problem with valuing replicas, the old adage “it’s worth what someone is prepared to pay for it” springs to mind, and so a high profile auction is probably the way to go; however the right thing to do, is to offer it back to those who built it, for the money it owes them.

If I may, having had some experience with both pikeys and scrap dealers, sadly I would say that there is little chance of this plaque being recovered, the former group of individuals are totally adept at melting down beer barrels on open fires,so what chance a bronze plaque?

the second group have (in the main) considerably more in common with the first group, than the rest of us; in either event it will get mixed in with a large amount of similar material.

There will be no raids on camps, whilst they are all the same to us, in the eyes of the law they are all individuals and it would be akin to raiding a whole street, but not looking for any one person.

I would urge those on this forum that are involved with the placing of memorials, to serioulsy consider the use of either stone, or resin, because this problem won’t go away; one of the worst aspects (for me) is my total lack of suprise, and a reluctant acceptance of this sort of behaviour that is indicative of a country going down the pan.

Seriously big heavylift type transport, gear down, (white with blue stripes and lots of wheels) and very low, on approach to Wattisham; anyone know what it is (I’m not very good with aeroplanes…

There are quite comprehensive photos on the net regarding the build, the fuselage appears to be a traditional aluminium monocoque, the wings seem to have quite a bit of steel box and angle, especially at the root end; not a bad thing when you have hundreds of people clambering over them at shows.

Presumably you have a pressure relief valve in the hydraulic circuit? normally hydraulic pumps are directly driven from the crankshaft, so i would have thought the pump splitting into two, was excess pressure, maybe caused by rapid deceleration of the engine (throttling back) but a relatively constant speed at the hyd motor, due to prop blade inertia; don’t forget a pump is a motor and viceversa, depending on which one is being driven.

I believe they misled a little with the ‘safe haven’ under the stairs. A small proportion of (terraced) houses would have had stairs adjoining an external wall – although I guess more semi-detached houses might have. I’ve always understood (and my mother and auntie sheltered under-stairs in Coventry) that the strong structure of the stairs would provide some protection from downward blast/falling debris (and give rescuers a focal point to head for?). Look again at the amount of brick debris on top of that staircase.

Similarly the comment by an interviewee about sheltering under the kitchen table. Not wishing to be flippant but kitchen tables were built stronger in those days and probably would have protected the other interviewee who was injured by the ceiling falling on him.

    Roger Smith.

They did build (as you probably know) a table shelter, named after someone other than Anderson, obviously you could still be buried alive in your own home; we used to have one of these as a welding table, but after a gale brought a fence down, my dad dismantled it and used the legs to reinforce the fence posts…it probably still stands!

Give that bottle of milk a medal!

A good effort I thought; be interesting to see how the rest of the series pans out, as I don’t think that block of houses can take much more…..

Not agricultural, those split rim wheels are an industry standard, usually 3 stud, some are even shod with high speed tyres (not sure how high speed) usually braked, some on leaf springs some on indespension; I used to buy quite a few of them, I don’t think 2 of them were ever the same…..

We do seem to be going round in circles here, my original post was a statement of fact; 1, her hearing was badly damaged as a direct result of the bombing, and 2, she can’t stand the smell of BBQ food, because it reminds her of the smell of burning flesh.

You appear to have taken these comments as an attack on a program (as yet unseen by myself) and that is not how they were intended.

I personally believe how the war affected people, had much to do with what age they were, my mother was 10, her brother was 3, it had little effect on him, however my father was 16 when he joined up in 1940, by then he had already seen much of his home town destroyed, and then off to the horror of war proper.

I have no issues regarding any attempt to recreate the Blitz, however I think that as with other attempts at this sort of thing, it will fall short of the horror and devastation, and even the essence of what enduring and surviving the Blitz was all about.

Some people had a good war, some didn’t; my mother is one of the latter, and rarely speaks of it, unless prompted, however her experiences are as valid as anyones.

“With respect, that’s a bit churlish, isn’t it”

Sorry the definition of churlish I have is rude/vulgar; I thought that recreations were just that, recreations, not a sanitized version of events, or a corruption of the truth.
