Anyone got any more information on this Spitfire. Last I knew was that it was under restoration. I hadn’t heard of it having flown. If so when did she fly and anyone have any photos of it??

Did some searching throughout my Spitfire books and came up with a colour profile. In the Arco-Aircam series on the Spitfire MkI-XVI is a profile of a DL-N Spitfire. It quotes it to being a MKIa of No 54 Squadron at Hornchurch in early summer of 1939. The profile has the early two colour fuselage roundel and the fin arrowhead. What I found interesting however is the profile shows a wire aerial as the example in the photo has, and not a larger wood faired aerial…. The profile also has the aircraft in the white/black underscheme.

MRP – excellent post. I think you’ve missed a 6th (not sure – I didn’t know of any of the ones you’ve mentioned!) at Sidney, BC with BCAM, just finished recently. From talking to them they were looking at the ‘cut spar’ approach. (Note it was mentioned by Neil at the beguinning, but there are some great photos off from the aircraft’s own page. Enjoy

Yes the BCAM went with the cut spar approach. They did this as they didn’t have the room in the restoration shop to do the wing in one go! The project was going to be a static rebuild from the start as well. Because of the ‘cut spar’ approach they were able to fit in an Auster and a Norseman and a S55 into the restoration shop at the same time. The Norseman was completed a year before the Anson and was done to flyable condition. The S55 was a simpathetic restoration. The Museum is currently still working on the Auster to flyable standard and have started to work on a Harvard.

BCAM

Have you tried contacting the BCAM in Victoria BC Canada?
They just finished an Anson restoration last summer. I don’t belive it was a MkII, however they may still have some drawings of use to you…Good Luck and the Halifax looks Great! Just wish something of that scale could happen on the west coast of Canada!

Just checked the BCAM web site – Their Anson is a MK II! Good Luck.

I suppose I’m not really interested in if NH523 is classed as a survivour. (Don’t want to open that debate!) I am interested however in what still survives of her and where she is now..

Besides the current MJ772, TE308 also had this conversion during her history. As seen here while owned by Don Plumb.
