Shame there was never a naval Mirage F.1
Why no “Sea Grippen”?
Agreed! Makes ALOT more sense to buy super bugs or Rafaels than to develope essentialy a whole new a/c.
The F-35 is nice lookin….but……I just cant see it happening. Lord I do hope Im wrong tho………
Sadly the carrier at yeovilton will probably be the nearest any of us will get to a RN ctol carrier for the forseeable future. Oh and here is that ‘S mk3’ Bucc in 801 colours! BTW if you get your hands on this months Navy News there is a deck by deck cutaway of Ark Royal IV, showing just how 2700 sailors could be fitted into a ship that size!
I always thought the MOD/government in general would not allow Ark Royal to be preserved because they saw her as an embarrassment (ie because they were getting rid of CTOL naval aviation) and thought the sooner she was gone the sooner everyone would forget about the whole carrier crisis and the ‘end of empire’. On the other hand, when the Falklands were invaded, Admiral Leach briefed Margaret Thatcher about the Task Force he was assembling, and after telling her that Hermes and Invincible would be sent along with all the Sea Harriers available, she apparently replied “And you’ll be sending the Ark Royal with her Phantoms and Buccaneers of course?”, only to be told that her government had scrapped the Ark Royal 18 months earlier, and the Phantoms and Buccaneers were now effectively impotent in the hands of the land based RAF. Lessons of history…
Lessons of history?! Now you.ve done it! Certain posters here dont believe in that! Prepare for PARAGRAPHS of why you are just wrong and “history” means nothing!n
Visited the Midway last August. WONDERFUL experience! Now……..were the 3in AA guns on Vicky the only mounts of their type in the RN? I see Tiger and Blake had 3in guns, but the mounts seem different.
Whats wrong with “hun”?
My fav was allways 25 de Mayo….with Melbourne a VERY close second.
It allways seemed strange to me, the decision to fit low powered machinery in them thus giving them only 24/25 knt top speed. Not enough for fleet work. What was the thinking behind this?
I understand one of the big cpmplaints bout the ww2 Illustrious class was hanger height. What was it on Vicky after rebuild?
The Victorious plan drawing was scanned from a bokk called ‘Royal Navy Aircraft Carriers 1945-1990’ by Leo Marriott, and the drawing is on page 73. Also there is a similar one for CVA-01 on page 79 which I have ‘coloured in’ and included below. Also some other pics from the archives, including Hermes, Eagle, Ark and my take on the F-35B colour scheme!
Very nice seeing the F-35s in RN markings…..makes you think what might have been…….shame really.
If Argentina had bought Victorious…….would have been EXSPENSIVE for them to keep her and her air group up.
FT Drum today.
Ummm… Fort Drum?
Correct!
Falkalnd were just an example. What i want to ask is how long will it need to have SHAR’s back in case of emergency?
Not sure AV-8B+ solution will work. They are not exactly the same of a GR9 and is not sure USA will give you the planes.
Not exactly the same for sure….but much easier for a pilot to convert to AV-8B+ from GR.9 than to SHAR
