If China built a STOVL carrier, what type of aircraft would it carry? The Harrier isnt in production any more………I dont believe any are available to them on the 2nd hand market………..I’m sure the US wouldn’t sell them VSTOL F-35s…….so they would have to develope there own aircraft….poss based on the YAK-141……..I just don’t see that happening……..
They were very nice looking ships……I understand Taiwan has the Kidd class now……
OUTSTANDING pictures!!! Was wondering 2 things…..can the SuEs operate from US CVs ………and can the F-14 operate from CdG? Neat to think the F-18Es can fly from CdG….what sort of weapon load can they take off from her with?
The YAK would poss get a few buyers………but I didn’t like the idea of relying on turning on seperate engines (especialy Russian ones) just to land on ship…………with the F-35 VSTOL maybe comeing online soon the question is prob moot……
I like how the French CdG can (in theory) crossdeck with a US CV quit easily………at least with F-18Cs………not sure the “Super Bug” could operate off her safely……….Hope the 2 new Brit carriers (if the RN gets them) will be able to operate similarly……
What a HUGE mistake……..
The state of Russian carrier aviation would be slightly better if they had opted for the MIG-29 stead of the Sukoi…………MIG is more versatile than current SU naval varients and could be carried in larger numbers,……….
Always the budget……..I think they could have had a much better ship if they had not insisted on nuclear propulsion for it….and then doing it on the cheap….
An Iwo Jima can only do 20 knts….and that was when they was new……..plus they is UGLY!!!!! And VERY manpower intensive…..
The only problem with diesels and gas turbines powering carriers is that you need a steam plant for the catapults…..hope the new electromagnetic ones come online soon…..
Nice changing the rules once a point is made ……………..when was the last time Victory moved? Constitution moves once a year and is a commisioned vessel of the United States Navy……..I havent seen Victory listed in Janes……but I haven’t seen this years yet……..but I’m willing to bet Constitution is in it…….
In 1956 France deployed 2 carriers for offensive operations at Suez………Say what you will about France (and I have BIG problems with them) but credit were credit is due…….they have the most effective aircraft carrier outside of the United States……..they have maintained an effective carrier force since the early 1950s……..and have done more than any other nation on Earth except the US to field aviation capable ships……..
I think Constitution has a navy crew…….not sure but I seem to remember seeing a recent docu on tv and they were interviewing her commanding officer……a woman! She was a serving naval officer. USS Constellation is a museum in Baltimore and is afloat, but not a commisioned warship. I seem to remember Constitution being listed in Janes Fighting Ships as in commision…..could be wrong. Don’t the Brits have HMS Warrior moored somewhere?
Didn’t the Russians have the Graf Zeppelin at the end of ww2? She sank enrt to Russia? Can’t quite remember….. Anyways…in my humble opinion……the Russian carrier’s large battery of antiship missiles is a HUGE waste of space that should more rightly go to aviation facilities…….If your gonna go to the trouble of building a bic CV….make it a CV!!! NOT a hybrid that isnt particularly good at either mission…..
To curlyboy……pretty harsh your judgment on USS Constitution…….HMS Victory may technicaly be flagship of the 2nd Sea Lord, but imagine he mantains an office in a more modern building somewhere. And Constitution does move once a year. Also, I believe the battleship Arizona is technicaly still in commision.
