The movie Sahara was fiction……….the only Confederate ironclad to cross an ocean was CSS Stonwall…..built in France…..never saw the Confederacy……..a Confederate ironclad was found in a river in Georgia? and raised and is now on display (the Confederate Navy commisioned 22 ironclads during the course of the war- their achillies heel was their engines) A union ironclad-the USS Cairo-was raised from the Mississippi river some years ago and is now on display. The turret of Uss Monitor was raised and is at the Mariners Museum in Newport News Virginia……

USS Olympia is still intact….an armored cruiser……she was ADM Dewey’s flagship at Manila Bay in 1898……..now a museum at Philidelphia? I think the Japanese predrednaught Mikasa is still in existance……and the Chilaens? have a cruiser from the 1870s? as a museum……Blanco Enclada?

Seems to me when the navy used Lexington as a training CV she could only handle TA-4s and T-2s………..guys in the RAGs had to qualify on full size CVs and the navy was ok with that for decades……..only retired Lex cause she was old and expensive to operate…….

    I like the idea of a common hull……….on could be an AAW/AsuW platform….another an air capable platform, and a third a gunfire support/AsuW ship………just a thought…

It seems that the Navy could build a pretty inexpensive vessel for this purpose………it would take alot of pressure off the attack carriers and would be more responsive to the training needs of the Navy. By the way, no cats on the Sable or Wolverine……the only paddle-wheel carriers ever……

Agree no hanger really needed. It wouldn’t need 30knts either……..or a huge electronic suite…….I think 25 to 28knts would be fine……..

Right now the Navy is trying desperatly to mothball Kennedy. They have canncelled her refit and plan on taking her out of service this summer. Sen Warner has introduced a bill in the Senate to force the navy to keep 12 CVs in service but John Mcain and some other republicans are opposing it….we’ll know in the next few days if they can save her, but it looks grim……If she goes, Norfolk will lose a carrier when they send a CVN to be homeported in Mayport.

So it seems the only realistic thing the Brazillians could do would be updating the Skyhawks with a multi-mode radar and BVR missile. Little fantasising coming on here………They could operate T-45 Goshawks………and BAE has made single seat Hawk strike planes in the past (only the truly dense will not see where I’m going with this at this point) so how hard (or expensive) would it be to make a single-seat hawk carrier capable? Probably too much for Brazille to aford, but would India be interested? I read in latest issue of Air Forces Monthly that Indian Navy would like 8 Hawks for lead-in-fighter training………I would put France in, but they send all their carrier pilots to US for training allready…..

I wouldn’t reactivate the Iowas…….WAY too manpower intensive……..aren’t the new DDX “destroyers” supposed to have 155mm guns? I would propose some sort of new “gun cruiser” (CA) with 2 to 4 8in guns or 6 to 8 155mm guns and decent AA missile systems……..

Foch could carry as many as one would be willing to pack on. A whole bunch if she was just acting as an a/c ferry…….
