Could diesels(sp) have provided a viable powerplant?

If CVV could operate the F-14, I take it that CVA would have been able to also?

Wanshan, if you could find deck plans I wouldn’t be surprised if the total area taken up by the two islands on QE is very similar to the area taken up by the one island of Cavour.

Would be interesting to know anyway. But just becase you have two superstructures doesnt mean the total area used will be higher then if there is one.

If u move the island to the center of the flight deck, would it inhibit air operations? It still takes up the same area, but now its smack in the center of the landing area……but the area is the same.

What’s the problem with two islands, the US was going to use them on the follow on to the Essex class.

But didnt and never has. That was 60 years ago. US practice is to have as little encumberance as possible of the flight deck. That philosophy has worked pretty well since the 1930s.

If they had gone ahead and had all 3 in service by the end of the 70s…..My opinion is the Falklans war wouldnt have happened.

Yes, had those plans gone forward, the RN would have been a truely formidable force…….4 CVAs and however many escort cruisers and type 81s…..funny how witht hte new CVs they RN got the lifts right but messed up the island(2) again. Would the CVV have been able to handle the F-14?

Maybe the cheapest solution would be to get Boeing to start AV-8B+ production up again.:D But really, other than prestige(sp), what real mission does Sao Paulo have?

Bomb racks on a T-45…….cheapest solution. Probably wire them for sidewinders too……

Was looking at some footage of A-4 operations off the Sao Paulo on you-tube today…..VERY impressive! Then I looked up HMS Melborne and found some nice shots of her operating her a/c……..wow! Even for the SkyHawk she was tiny! Looks much more comfortable flying off Sao P!

V/STOL operations just wont be the same……….just not as……exciting?……as seeing a deck full of Bucks and Phantoms, with the steam from the cats whisping everywhere………
