Anyway, 2 of the 4 airworthy examples at Zhukovskii? I think there are only three left airworthy, one left languishing in disrepair, and bits of static airframes scattered about.
Tupolev Bombers says 6 examples were left- 4 being airworthy, 2 being not- one of those that weren’t air worthy was probably the one “destroyed” to figure out what happened to the ill-fated Bort 01.
I’m still hoping that MiG can secure a MiG-29M1/M2 sale to go along with its MiG-29K/KUB sale to the Indian Navy.
Some more MiG-29SMTs to add to Algeria and Yemen’s orders would be nice too.
Any news articles on this? I hope they don’t pull a politics and change the FX contest so that only the Mirage 2000Br can win. The Su-35 would give then the most capable aircraft in South America.
PAC-3 almost certainly, though this article as usual gets it wrong, the PAC-3 doens’t have a chance against ICBMs, only TBMs.
the next gen of US air defense systems will be laser-based. destruction at the speed of light. shoots down eveything down to missiles and arty shells… can an S-400 do that? that’s where all their R&D cash is going… it’s the russians who are gonna get hopelessly left behind.
The Airborne Laser program is currently a farce and the MTHEL system is currently decidely THEL and never intended to be anything more than short-range. The next-gen of US air defense is THAAD- a missile system. So yeah, you’re wrong 🙂
Seriously, this is just hyerpbole, but its interesting to know that the system after S-400 is on the way.
How do you tell the difference?
Awesome (I of course have them)- What program do you use to reduce the size of the pics without reducing the quality (it seems)?
This year.
How likely is it that Russia will allow India to copy Russia’s best submarine?
Not very likely at all.
How likely is it that the first submarine India builds will be as good as Russia’s best?
Nil, obviously. I don’t think anyone’s said that.
This claim about the Indian ATV being a derivative of the Russian Severodvinsk-class (Yasen) SSGN is just a wet dream.
It’s obvious the Russians won’t just hand over their newest SSN design hook, line and sinker to another country, but that doesn’t mean that the “ATV” won’t have potential to be a respectable SSN relative to others, or that it won’t borrow design concepts from the Pr. 885 Yasen.
The ATV is probably an attempt to clone the old Soviet Charlie II submarine. India has been struggling to build the ATV for decades.
That’s just being ridiculous- quietening, reactor, and systems have advanced considerably since then; it won’t be a clone of some old thing like the Charlie II.
One note about the original article- the Yasen and the Akula II are not SSGNs. The addition of cruise missiles to the arsenal doens’t make a sub an SSGN. Look at VLS equipped USN subs- they’re still called SSNs.
Sorry, that’s the best I’ve got 🙂
You got the wrong game. The faction in Generals using the lasers is the USA Laser General, which has laser equipped tanks. China Tank General does not have lasers.
It is in Earth 2150 and its expansion packs, that you have the Eurasian Dynasty (Russia+China+Mongolia alliance) that you have Chinese like tanks that shoot lasers.
I know, I wasn’t saying that’s a Chinese ability in Generals (playing as the US is zzzzzzzzzzzz, I play with tanks first and foremost), just a general thing.
Why not very well? I think China should have something comparable.
I would love to see what reasoning you could have for this assumption.
What else is that Laser shown for except to shoot down SOMETHING.
You do know that lasers are not just employed for shooting things down, right?? Unless you want to contend that China has abilities only seen in computer games like C&C Generals and the US still has to plant its big THEL emitter in a building (MTHEL is HWMMV based, but still far larger), which is needless to say- absurd.
Also see the Airborne Laser program.
Svero doesnt seem hugely diff from Akula2 but for VLS cells and a
massive bow sonar.
It also has torpedo tubes on the sides of the hull canted outwards, rather than the typical place on the bow. More room for the huge sonar. You can sort of see the red-marked torpedo tubes on the sides in the US Naval Intelligence diagram posted.
Here’s a more up to date version of that one, different angle (slightly).
As to monoblock reactors, the SSN-774 Virginia (which of course just sailed) has them as well. They actually exceed the service life of the submarine, I hear.
fantastic. what r lasers used for? how do chinese fare against usa in laser research?
The US has lasers that can shoot down artillery shells (MTHEL). In other words, not very well at all.
Any upgraded sensors to enhance all-weather and night attack capability?
Yes- navigational bombing, anyway. The LCD MFD also offers future compatibility with say, SAPSAN, I’d guess.
Official details of the upgrade is as follows: http://af.airfleet.ru/issues/25/page_18.phtml
Just to clarify some of the statements:
creating a new cockpit-management system with a color multi-purpose display;
confirmation that it is an LCD MFD
MF OES Zakhvat multipurpose optoelectronic system;
What’s this?
An electronic intelligence station, the successor to the obsolete radar warning system, that detects emitting air defence radars and warns the pilot of the threat degree considerably reduces a possibility of hitting the modernised aircraft.
Pastel RWR, from other news reports.
Basically, the avionics have been practically swapped out. The sensors are all more capable and more accurate.
Awesome find!
Is the MFD in the cockpit color?
The Russians are putting LCD MFDs in all their aircraft, I’d say that’s a pretty good assumption. It’s not nearly as tarted up as the Su-25KM Scorpion cockpit, but luckily the upgrade is more combat capable irrespective of the pretty cockpit of the Scorpion.
