I don’t know about India, but in order to replace the An-12s the Russians would need about 200 at least, IIRC.

[EDIT: I often wonder about the very reason for such weapons, i.e. VERY LONG range BVRAAMs. With the restricted ROE that often hampers Allied interventionist campaigns with BVR weapons, and the Cold War LONG gone, as well as the continuing drive (with no end in sight) to drive out terrorists, what exactly is the drive behind the European Metoer and even the Russian R-77M? Both of which will, or should have, head on attack ranges WELL in excess of 100km.

Missile development houses have to justify their existence 🙂

The R-77M really won’t be in the same category as Meteor BVRAAM. That’s R-77M-PD/RVV-AE-PD. The R-77M will probably extend the range to about 100km over the current 75km (assuming same engagement profiles for both)- it’s change over the R-77 is the ballistic flight trajectory (as well as a new seeker, I bet).

What is the status of the R-77M?

Haven’t heard anything new, except that it’s in development. Launch weight increased to 185kg (10kg increase over R-77).

There’s also a version with an infrared seeker (R-77T? R-77MT?) and R-77-3PK (ground-launched SAM), as well as RVV-AE-PD aka R-77M-PD.

(I downloaded this .pdf from armada international’s latest issue- they offer it for free on their site, summing up major developments in air to air and ground to air missiles, and it mentioned the infared version as ‘RVV-TE’ and a passive seeker as ‘RVV-PE’)

Actually, what does the ‘PD’ stand for? I know D has something to do with range (Kh-31AD/Kh-31PD), but does the P denote ‘passive’? Reports do say the RVV-AE-PD is intended for attacking AEW aircraft.

Anyway, regarding ground launch, vertically launched firings were reported in 1993, from a trials canister simulating ship SAM installations, with a larger diameter motor incorporating TVC, folding fins and wings.

The VVS is waiting for the R-77M. The R-27 series is deemed adequate till then.

That video disturbed me. I saw the whole thing- there was no way that tube the Iraqi discarded and then ran away from could’ve been positively identiifed as a weapon, and none of the others were armed, yet they acted like they were absolutely positive and proceeded to execute them. I may have said this before, but for all they know:

Muhammed: “Hey, look what I found on the outskirts of town!”

Ahmed: “You idiot, that’s a missile tube! Throw it away before we’re shot!”

    Muhammed: “Ok”

    Ahmed: “Hurry up.”

    Muhammed: “Ok, I threw it-“

According to Jane’s Air Launched Weapons the R-27EM “probably entered service in 1990”.

Range is given at 110km (much longer than any other variant). It’s optimized for low-level engagements, and apparently has a modified fuze.

It confused me because he said 1.2M twice.

Thanks for that, one can more readily see the differences between the two aicraft now.

Considering the Indian contribution to Il-214, it’s obvious that it should win the competition, IMO.

It gives added motivation if MiG would provide its MiG 1.44 experience to Chengdu to help create a twin engined RD-93 J-10. It will help them sell more engines!

I think their MiG-29 experience would be more relevant considering the type of engine; the MiG 1.44 is powered by 175kN AL-41Fs after all.

    What’s RD-93 thrust again?

    The missile, or the target?

    Meh, need a full translation.

    Erm- “Range at 1.2M”

    What do you mean?

Furthermore, if you’re going to include the Meteor BVRAAM, then it’s only fair to include the RVV-AE-PD/ R-77M-PD- they’re both development missiles, after all.

The Il-214 looks pretty much like the Tu-330; it also uses turbofans rather than turboprops. No good pictures on the net unfortunately.

Well, speaking for myself my predeliction for former Soviet/ Russian equipment makes me see the Tiger as just too light for me to take seriously. The bigger, uglier, more heavily armored and ridiculously big-gunned the attack helo (*cough*2A42 ripped off a BMP-2*cough*, the better 🙂
