That must mean an export order, right? The Iskander-E is not for Russian forces, after all (the Tender being the model for Russian forces, and the Iskander-M being an interim model).

The Mi-28N has helmet mounted display sights that include an IR view of the outside. This information is gathered by the sensors and displayed in little HUD type optics in front of both of the pilots eyes. As these sensors don’t look through the windows but instead have their own stabilised mounts the pilots view of the outside is not limited by his field of view…

What’s the HUD of the pilot for then? I didn’t know the helmet mounted displays were operational.

Another pic of the new Mi-28N from Russian TV

Thanks for that- damn, did they load it up with standard armament on the same day, or seperate flight?

Well, it’s not a secret, we all know about it! 🙂

It’s a visible hatch on the right side of the chopper, along the tail. It leads to a small ‘avionics compartment’ that can carry two men (e.g. the crew of a downed fellow Mi-28).

Probably a good part of those “3,000 new design solutions”- my guess is they figured out a way to rearrange whatever is in that section of the aircraft so as to do away with that ugly bulge. I don’t think the original Mi-28 had it either.

Anyone else notice that the OP-2 lacks the ugly rectangular bulge sticking out of the right side of the OP-1?

Why does the upgrade include both LITENING and Sniper XR? Isn’t that redundant?

The first production version just flew. Check the relevant topic on the forum.

All are nice, if you like purely theoretical designs. But if you think developing those into actual operational combat aircraft is going to be as easy and cheap as the designer claims, i have a few other good business deals i want you to invest in. [/B]

No no no, that leaves all the funny out of the line, you’re supposed to say something like “I have some swampland in Florida ….” etc.

so, am i correct in guessing that these babies will be rushed to chechneya?

Not yet- if the war is still going in 2006/7, maybe.

    Cool ….

for some reason, that shot reminds me a lot of the HIND- I think it’s the wide ventral side. It definitely has a new cannon system as well (the 2A42 is the same, of course).

When you say the usual MMW radar mast, do you mean the latest one on the OP-1?

30cm from a porthole? The crews heads are most certainly not that close to the glass, either for the pilot or the gunner- also note that the pilot has larger windows than the gunner, for obvious reasons- the gunner doesn’t need them to do his job.

The visibility on the Mi-28N cockpit isn’t poor- it’s not a matter of sheer size, it’s more a matter of the minimum number of obstructions to the FOV of the pilot- that’s why the original Mi-24 glasshouse cockpit was so poor. If you see pics of the Mi-28 with pilots aboad, the pilot’s helmet is always aligned with the canopy windows- giving him an unobstructed view to front, left and right. Mil already learnt their lesson.

As to protection, the glass is protected against 23mm shell fragments and direct hits from .50 calibre heavy machine guns like the M2 Browning and DShkM or NSV- without deforming of the canopy (i.e. still see through it).

Comparison pic- is it me, or do the cannon ammo boxes look different? I’m also wondering about the FLIR now …
