What’re the stats of the EH 101 and NH 90? Far as I know the Mi-38 has pretty serious lifting capacity (5,000kg, 1,000kg more than the mighty HIP), heavier max takeoff weight (15,600kg vs 13,000kg) , and holds 32 passengers. Has all the bells and whistles along with that:

    – air conditioning,
    – rotor de-icing
    – a weather/nav radar
    – preset flight control system allowing full autopilot, auto-hover and automatic landing.
    – Avionics controlled by a central computer, also linked to the automatic nav system with Doppler, ILS, GPS, main radar, auto-stabilization system and automatic radio compass.
    – equipment monitoring, failure warning and a damage control system.
    – fly-by-wire controls,
    – two-crew EFIS cockpit with six LCD MFDs
    – Single crew operation is possible for pure cargo missions.
    – A closed-circuit TV is used for monitoring cargo loads and slung loads.
    – Options also include low-cost analog instrumentation based on that of the Mi-8/Mi-8M.

Does it really matter comparing the performance of advanced trainers? The T-50 Golden Eagle, the Yak-130, the MiG-AT, the M-346, the Hawk, none of them will ever meet each other in battle. At best, they’d be used as dirty and cheap CAS.

The only problem is, it has taken so long to get it flying that in the meantime, things have changed.

There isn’t the money to replace the old Hip – at least in Russia – so it will continue in service – with upgrades – and the Mi-38 will be pitched at the international market.

If you want a new helicopter, built to FAR/JAR standards and you have the money – then the Mi-38 is probably a good buy.

If you operate a Mi-17, then replacing it with a Mi-38 will probably be too expensive, so an upgrade would be a better option.

Pity though, it looks like it might be competitive on the international market – if it gets the right backing.

The Mi-38 will eventually replace the Mi-8M/17 in Russian service; but not anytime soon- the cost of replacing the fleet will be reduced because it’s not meant to be a type-for-type replacement- the Ka-60 & Mi-38 will jointly replace the Mi-8M/17, as the latter has always been a bit too big for some jobs to be efficient all the time. With a Blackhawk ‘class’ helicopter like the Ka-60, this allows a smaller number of Mi-38s to be procured. There’ll also be two versions- the nice expensive version with glass cockpit etc etc, and a cheap ‘steam gauge’ version. I expect that whichever the Russians want, it’ll have to be night capable.

Point that Russia cannot give equipment for free. Of course they can, they have hundreds of aircrafts rotting on different airfields completely unused and many of them are MiG-29’s. So why they could not give us 12 MiG-29C as donation?

Even if this were true (and it’s complete nonsense), you expect Russia to just pull the money out of it’s behind to get these aircraft, your crews and your pilots up to standard on them?

Or USD is more important to them than friendship? They showed how impotent they are over their role in Kosovo zone of responsibility. They wanted to ship hundreds and hundreds of troops via air to Pristina, and Romanian Air Force commander just told them if you try we will shoot you down .So mighty Russia was stopped by 3rd rated military power.

Are you suggesting that Russia should have gone to war with another country over it? Are you crazy?

And where are Russians today? Are they still in Kosovo? No they are not, they have gone home and quietly gave control of Slatina Airbase to NATO. They could not waited few more years so that we can reach deal that will partition Kosovo on Serbian and Albanian part and hopefully, also get control over Slatina airbase, perhaps one of the most fortified bases in this part of the Europe.
And to answer question of Russian technology inferiority, just look on Arab Israeli wars. Every time Arabs came in power with latest Russian technology they where humiliated by Israelis who inflicted serious losses on them every single time. After last Syrian Israeli air war over Beka valley, Russians where screaming, β€œWhere were Arabs. What do you need to win” Replay was very simple, some really good missiles and aircrafts . [/B]

And of course the soldiers using the equipment had nothing to do with it, right? After all, the Israelis captured vast amounts of equipment Arab soldiers abandone on the field, and used them AGAINST them- and had high praise for them (including the T-55- of which the Israelis operated hundreds). Soviet weapons were respected WHEN THEY WERE MODERN- or don’t you know about the ZSU-23 Shilka and Kubs success when they were deployed against the Israelis.

I’m sorry that Serbia was forced to use old obsolete crap like that 30 years after it was any good, but that’s your problem.

If Russians liked us so much they could upgrade free of charge MiG-29 to M or SM standard, but they did not.

That’s fantasy. They couldn’t afford to upgrade their own military, where would they get the money to upgrade your airforce for you? Furthermore, you can’t just upgrade a plane and jump in the cockpit. There’s new training from the groundcrew to the pilot that has to be done.

PS- the MiG-29M was a new-build aircraft, you can’t upgrade existing aircraft to its standard.

Or to send us some BUK-M batteries

How would they get there exactly? Anyone who wanted to export to Serbia would only get away with sending small things; which Serbia already had (Igla-1).

Great post- thinking some more on it, I’d say the Su-27IB/Su-34 commonlality with the Su-27SM is probably in term of glass cockpit (the same MFDs, though presumably more of them like in that old Su-34 cockpit shot) and the avioncis like I said before.

The original interview doesn’t mention the Su-25SM upgrade, but I assume what Jane’s says is accurate. IIRC, a regiment is some 45 aircraft; though I don’t like the Yak-130 ‘secondary strike role’ thing- it’s inappropriate, IMO.

The Pantsyr-S1 thing is not unexpected- Journal of Electronic Defense first broke the story of the RuAF interest in it last year.

The comments regarding the Su-27IB avionics compared to those of the Su-27SM are interesting- I would assume that he’s speaking of the quality of the processors/computer used in the series built aicraft that lifted into the air in December- it’s only natural to assume that the prototype Su-27IB aircraft had far inferior avionics in that department.

It wasn’t cancelled… it just wasn’t accepted. They chose the simpler, cheaper Su-25SM upgrade instead.

I mean the Su-25TM cancellation in LOMAC πŸ™‚

I would assume that now that Boeing owns McDonnel Douglas that it also now owns all the info about McDonnel Douglas aircraft like the F-15.

Yeah, but what does it mean for the discussion?

Why should such popularity effect my opinion?

Do you enjoy and buy games that you don’t like but happened to sell well?

Not necessarily, but it does happen often- the point is I can understand why they went certain paths, and I think the series is better for it.

The Mig-29 was introduced in the Flanker 2.5 upgrade.

That was an extremely poor rendition of the MiG-29K, remember?

Flanker 3… later Flanker Attack was to introduce the Su-25.

That’s irrelevant, because Flanker Attack didn’t happen.

Indeed and the excuse given was that it was based on the Flanker series, and that the developers were Russian. Also that games like Falcon offered one aircraft… they should be happy with the number they are getting etc etc.

Obvious solution is drop all the western aircraft. Books and magazines are published all the time with titles like Combat aircraft that do not include Russian or Eastern aircraft. The reverse should be allowed too.

Flanker 1.0, 2.0 and 2.5 already did that- I was happy to see the new material.

o a FLIR pod is only needed for all weather day night capability. If it was included it could be fitted to the Mig-29s and Su-27s as well, much like the wests Litening pods. The Kopyo radar has air to ground modes… they haven’t included any aircraft with air to ground radar… one of the reasons for not including the F-16 or F-18. Suggestions that the F-18 will be added suggests that it is on the drawing board. When it is ready then a kop’yo pod could also be added.

That wouldn’t work- they would have to be MiG-29SMTs and Su-27SMs to even begin to think about that, and that opens up a whole new can of worms regarding SAPSAN and such; perhaps the Su-25TM could be added in an expansion, but again the mention of the F/A-18 is just talk at this point.

IIR means Imaging infrared seeker. [/B]

No, IIR means imaging infared. Regardless, it is incorrect nomenclature for missiles- the term is IR, not IIR. IIR refers to night vision systems through which you see through, not the seekers of missiles, in general.
