In Dutch there’s a word called “komkommertijd”, which means nothing is really hapenning. OK, still thousands get killed in wars, from deseases, gas explosions but it’s summer. π However, world war I also started 90 years ago during a nice vacation so we can be optimistic.
Crap. I mean, it’s a movie, it’s not thΓ© truth. Banning it only rises new questions among the people.
It was a true disaster indeed. But try to be a bit more discrete Jeanske. I know you – like most of the Belgians today – were shocked, but don’t CNN’ise this. How bad this may seem, don’t forget this happens once every 50 years in our country, and not daily like in Sudan. It is a tragedy though, and a national mourning is appropriate now.

BRUSSELS, Belgium — At least 10 people were killed and 100 others injured when a leaking underground natural gas pipeline exploded in southern Belgium, officials said.
The blast occurred about 8:30 a.m. Friday as workers were repairing the leak. Firefighters and police responding to the leak were among the dead, officials said.
The explosion in the industrial area of Ghislenghien, about 30 kilometers (20 miles) southeast of Brussels, happened after construction workers pierced the underground line, The Associated Press quoted acting provincial governor Guy Petit as telling Belgian media.
Local officials initially said 15 people were killed, as did Belgian news media, and the Belgian Health Ministry originally reported 14 dead.
But later Friday Health Ministry spokesman Michele Vanderplaetsen said the government could confirm only 10 deaths, AP reported.
Interior Minister Patrick Dewael said several of the dead were firefighters who were setting up a security perimeter after the leak was reported.
The regional civil protection agency gave a provisional figure of at least 100 wounded, while the Health Ministry said 200 were wounded, including 100 burn victims. The reason for the discrepancies among the casualty reports was unclear.
The explosion sent huge fireballs into the air, flung bodies hundreds of yards, burned two factories and left a large crater between them.
One witness described it as a “mini-Hiroshima.”
“There were bodies in parking lots, in the fields; burned-out cars in an area half a kilometer wide,” Reuters quoted fire department spokesman Francis Boileau as saying.
“It looks like a war zone. … There were people fleeing who I am sure we will find too late in the fields several hundred yards away.”
French and Belgian emergency teams, including Belgian army units and dozens of ambulances, converged on the scene. Victims with severe burns were taken by helicopter to hospitals across Belgium.
Area residents were told to stay indoors and keep their windows and doors closed to keep out heavy smoke, but the Health Ministry said the smoke was not toxic.
Police closed a stretch of the E429 motorway, which links Brussels to Lille and Calais, France, but no evacuation was ordered.
Aftermath of the explosion at Ghislenghien, Belgium
The blast shook the ground like an earthquake and could be seen and felt several kilometers (miles) away, witnesses told Belgian media.
Eyewitness Olivier Rampelberg, who lives about 3 km (2 miles) from the scene, said he heard a sound like a thunderclap.
“It sounded like continuous thunder,” Reuters quoted him as telling RTBF television. “Then little grains of scorched earth rained down.”
Another witness told a radio reporter: “It sounded as if a plane had crashed. All the windows shook. It was terrible, terrible,” Reuters said.
The line, one meter (yard) in diameter, carries gas from the Belgian port of Zeebrugge to northern France. Fluxys, which runs the country’s network of gas pipelines, confirmed the gas leak led to the explosion.
The company said its employees were not among the injured, and that disruptions to the region’s gas supply were minor.
Prime Minister Guy Verhofstadt returned from his holiday in Italy to visit the disaster site, his office said.
It was the deadliest disaster in Belgium since 14 people were killed in a motorway pile-up in thick fog in 1996, Reuters said.
The King and our gov’t said this was a true disaster for the whole of our country and therefor there will be a day of national mourning. Our armed forces have acted very fast and professional. Sea King helicopters and Agusta’s have been used to transport people to the military hospitals in Belgium and France.
In such a little country as Belgium disasters like this don’t happen a lot. This is the worst disaster since 40 years.
Sad news indeed. First thoughts to the firemen involved who were killed.
PC CD-Rom. But hell, no cheats avaiable x(. Doom III is too heavy for my computer, after having a look at the screenshots. And it’s not out yet in Europe.
Having acces to the sea most certainly is important. No better example than Iraq or why Saddam invaded Kuwait some years ago. Another case is the USSR. OK, the USSR was not exactly landlocked, but it was not able to have access to the sea: Germans in the Baltic Sea, Turks in the Black Sea and the Pacific was not an option before the Transsib. So the Czar (Alexander III) decided to form a new Norhern fleet on the Kola Peninsula and this was probably one of the main reasons the USSR has always been a threat, first to the Germans, later to NATO. As economy and politics are always related, this might be an explanation.
Some landlocked nations are amongst the richest: Austria, Switzerland, Luxembourg. This is because these nations cooperate with their neighbours (through the EU), if they don’t, they most likely end in Mongolia-like situations. Cutting off access to the sea could destroy a country’s economy. The Dutch did it centuries ago blocking the port of Antwerp which eventually led to the ‘Belgians’ taking up arms with their own occupiers (the Spanish) to fight this blockade. This shows how important such an access may be.
Here’s my dog meg: (young 3 weeks) (older 3 months)
The ideal dog! π how cute he is
Wouldn’t it be a good thing to actually start a chat-room?
where can i read comments on the reputation. Is it like the points each user has like on the old forum (the one from before 2002)
WHY?!
Is it just my computer or are all computers worthless pieces of ****. I can’t understand why people (including myself) give money to such a stupid machine which is broken all the time!!! First the internet, than software, now my CD-R drive. There’s always something going on … I HATE COMPUTERS! I want to throw this damn thing out of the window! Can you imagine someone selling sh!t and still make money. It makes me go crazy. Know the feeling? Shouting to the dog does NOT help, and if I weren’t such a coward, I’d call immediatelly to my local store and start yelling.
One more question on Pixies. Is this just a reunion-tour or is it really a come-back (and they can come back next year).
BTW did you notice how healthy they were looking. I thought Kim Deal would look like Ma Flodder, but she was just fine. They didn’t return on stage, instead, Charles Thompson chose to drink his beer on stage :p
I was the annoying kid with the black Pixies T-shirt trying to reach the first row. I hope you weren’t the Dutchmen who was upset because I was stabbing him in the back (really, I hate it when people are selfish during a concert). “Hey jaaj daar, wil je nou es effe opsodemieteren” was one of the phrases I experienced prior to the concert.
Pixies were great though! 20 Songs in just one hour. Especially My Veloria, Monkey Gone to heaven and Tame were performed excellent. My god, they are still number one.
Apart from Pixies, the festival was not as good as usual these days. Partially due the smell of people not having had a bad in days and plastic toilets.
Have you seen Daan, Arthur? Did you like it? yesterday, I had a discussion with two dutchmen about the Pixies. SOB’s also went to the A’dam concert. Merde, and then you are suprised if belgians try to keep the tickets for own use, even if that includes the use of deadly violence! :p Both were arrested today.
I did shout “Tettaa blooet” to PJ Harvey. That yellow dress and pink shoes just asked for it. Placebo was also a suprise to me, though I expected to see Brian Molko and Black Francis sing “Where’s my mind” together, luckily they didn’t! π
Anyway, I read in the newspaper that a Pixies-gig is planned (autumn) in Belgium. If I find out, I’ll let you know!
Now I’m going to take a shower, a good sh!t and shave myself.
Greaaaaaaaaaat!!
Never seen such a performance live. Really, the best I’ve ever seen. The Pixies were super!, at least according to the audience. Honestly, I don’t care David Bowie didn’t come tonight, this way, the Pixies got all the credits :D.
