May god continue to bless Belgium

“Viva la Belgique” was probably the most heard phrase today … “et pour les Flamands la meme chose”. Well, now both the French and Dutch can support us, because for once, it felt great to be “Belgian” again. I almost forgot we still had a flag, in fact, there were some rumours, next world cup, we would be playing with a Flemish and Walloon team … luckily not!!!

For us, playing a against the “great Brazil” is already an honour, it doesn’t matter if we win, Brazil now is the favourite, but after Argentina, France and Portugal send home, everything can happen. A final between Belgium and England would be nice, though I doubt we’ll even make it to the quarter finals.

BRUSSELS, Belgium (Reuters) — French and Dutch speaking Belgians buried their differences on Friday, uniting to sing and dance in praise of the national team after they qualified for the second round of the World Cup.

On the final whistle after Belgium’s thrilling 3-2 win against Russia, Red Devils supporters draped in the Belgian tricolour streamed into the streets in central Brussels singing: “Tous ensemble (All together)! Tous ensemble!”

Even a Russian second goal had failed to dampen spirits as supporters, crowded into dark, smoky pubs, chanted: “We don’t care! We don’t care!”

“I never thought it was possible. There was a lot of suspense and the final minutes were awful to watch…but I’m very proud to be Belgian,” said Jean-Pierre Van Zurpele as motorists hooted their horns and traffic was brought to a standstill.

Belgium finished runners-up in group H on five points, two behind Japan and two ahead of Russia. (Match report)

Despite press criticism of coach Robert Waseige — a French speaker — before Belgium’s last group match, all was quickly forgiven.

“It was not justified. Whether you’re Flemish or Walloon, the essential is to keep united, keep up morale,” said service station assistant Olivier Riche, who had changed his shift to watch the game.

“Belgium’s strength is that when we have nothing to lose, we put everything into the battle.”

Revenge was sweet for Waseige, who has already announced he will quit to coach league side Standard Liege after the World Cup. The last time the Belgians reached the last 16 was in 1994. In 1998, widely criticised, they bowed out in the first round.

The prospect of facing four times world champions Brazil in the next round did not daunt fans. “I’m persuaded we’ll beat Brazil. We’ll have Ronaldo in our pocket. We’ll beat them 1-0 — that will be enough,” said Antoine Vanderhaeghe, wearing a number seven shirt.

He could not resist adding salt to neighbour and old rival France’s wound after they were knocked out of the first round.

“We’re better than the French. We scored six goals, they didn’t get anything,” he said.

    RE: Flag colors

    Black-Red-Yellow

Black is the colour of Flanders (the lion), red the one from Wallonia (the chicken :-)). So they just combined both into one flag.

    I’m a bloody Belgian, student sciences-maths.

There’s no reason to hide my nationality, cause I’m proud to be Belgian. Just look at the surrounding countries. They all like to laugh with us. But who didn’t make it to the second round in the WC? Who couldn’t even qualify itself to join the WC? Haha … ok, we might have had some problems, but we are not the only one. Now you also have rightwing politicians in the surrounding countries; pedophiles, dioxin chickens (Germany) …

    RE: American Invation and Agression

Well, what Dutchy says is exactly what I heard. I thought I understood it wrong and therefor, I didn’t mention it here before. But it seems it is true.

If it is true that America would invade Holland to rescue their warcriminals, then I see no reason why the European allies should continue the war on terror, in fact, one shouldn’t even bother about some planes hitting a couple of towers. Warcriminals and terrorists are about the same, only the first ones are from the west and not arab.

Now it’s very clear that the US wants to protect its citizens because they are the better race. Terrorists should be brought to justice, but warcriminals … do we even have them? It’s just a hoax 😀

RE: Did Bush upset anyone else?

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 01-06-02 AT 06:20 AM (GMT)]In the pacific the US had a big role, but in Europe, that honour goes to the Russians. Sure, invading whole Europe would have cost the Soviets lots of lives, but I don’t think Stalin would care about that. The battle of Stalingrad was for the Germans the point of no return. The Russian tactics were also cruel, so I can imagine your case of bio-warfare. Their scorched-earth policy was also bad for the German moral. But history is not simple, and the Russians and Allies shacked hands in Torgau.

OK, America did do efforts to win this war, but some like us to believe that it was America who won this war, while it is so clear that Russia, Chinese resistance, played also a big role.
