Von Braun was an NSDAP party member since ’37, and from 1940 on Sturmbahnfรผhrer with the SS. Apart from political standing, joining the SS did ease missile production since Mittelberg was an SS-ran facility. You bet Wernher knew what was going on there.
Never suspected you would consider the Soviets the ‘right’ side. Besides, Von Braun had nothing to do with Sputnik…
Not directly he did not,but some of the info & technology gathered by Russia came from his research
in the final analysis which side had the better aviation expertise/technical prowess, and were we simply lucky to overcome the luftwaffe or were the germans simply overwhelmed with our tenacity? bearing in mind what the luftwaffe had on the drawing boards and in prototype form before 1940 would they have defeated us in the air war had these by then proven aircraft been in production at the wars commencement. ๐
Technologically, the Germans led the field in design overall.
However a shortage of raw materials & fuel, experienced crew, political interference & pushing untried designs in an effort of desperation, coupled with overwhelming allied forces in the latter part of the war led to the final collapse.
In short after 1941,the Hitler effectively surround himself with such a large enemy force, which cut off so many of the resources he needed, that it was only a matter of time before defeat was inevitable.:)
Did he not realise that all those V2’s fired at London (and other cities) were full of explosive, and aimed a civillians? I think he was lucky to escape an indictment for war crimes.
He probably was aware, but to use that argument is indicative of Barnes wallis, the dams raids,Arthur Harris…..need I go on? In reality it was a time of total war & sadly civilians were killed by both direct & indirect action.
I am not excusing his past, but you might as well throw war crimes at every leader &those who gave the orders to every member of armed services, irrespective of whose side they where on.
That aside his acheivements with the Mercury,Gemini,Apollo & Space Shuttle programmes (& the everyday items that we use in this technological age that were developed as a result),tend to eclipse his past misdermeanors.
After all, this forum and P.C. wouldn’t exist without those acheivments.:)
What I want to know is. Where do we apply to be extras ? See the `Memphis belle filming` thread. Looks like a lot of fun.:)
If you find out let us know:D ๐ ๐
Yes, Lancasters have a great deal in common with hot air balloons made of paper and powered by burning straw…
Yes, I know your comment was probably intended in jest…but to prevent any of the “…thick and stupid youth…” from getting the wrong idea. ..
The Wrights always gave credit to Lillenthal. But recall they they did expand on his unpowered weight-shifting hang glider. Not to mention reworking his lift tables and designing the first aerial prop (which entailed a lot more than changing boat designs). If you ever read one of their biographies (for a particularly technical one written by a pilot, read Combs’ Kill Devil Hill) you’ll see they did a lot more than hang an engine on a glider.Every time someone gets mad at America, they attack (or at least insult) the Wrights…Please keep in mind it was your own Science Museum that gave them credit for the world first manned , powered, controlled flight by an aeroplane.:D
I’ll admit it was in jest:D ,however the dig was at Americans:D ๐ & not the Wright Bros(I never mentioned their name until now)
The whole mentality behind the reasoning for the Arrows not to appear is so STUPID. We must be the only country in the World where we consider it bad to be PROUD to be a citizen of that country. Can you imagine, for instance – the Americans being told not to fly the Stars & Stripes at their events cos it might upset other countries/cultures? They’d be laughed off the face of the Earth. How infantile this all is.
If I’m not as proud to be British as I used to be – it’s because we have idiots like the one’s spouting this rubbish up there in our government…
I am still as proud as I ever was…….I am just annoyed at & fed up with those who claim they are but have the gall to appologise for every past misdermeanor, good or bad:mad: ๐ก ๐ก ๐ก
I have been asked by a local historian to try and trace details of an aircrash at South Moor Golf Course, near Stanley County Durham during World War 2.
Any of the accident experts able to help
If it is any help, friends of ours live in South Moor so I’ve asked them to find out what they can.I will pass any info on that I get.:)
Just tried on my works computer but “the computer says no”-shall do so when I wake up in the morning.:)
I have signed the petition, but it certainly needs more signatures-if anyone from “Flypast” reads this will you get them to publish the website in the magazine please?
I would imagiane the production team will have scoured Europe for any useful items such as the traveling cockpit that attends airshows and the fuselage section (Aeroventure?) that was used in the same drama as Just Jane?
I hope they do/have approached Aeroventure, It would be nice to contribute so long as they don’t ruin the story
๐ฎ
I’m still trying to explain the 1/24 Heritage Aviation Lanc that I just had to have when it was released…
You could always start with a large bunch of flowers……….then say “it was like this dear, I was just passing a shop and”………..:D ๐ ๐
Or you could put it in the loft for a few months & tell her it was one you bought before you were married.:D
Lets hope they don’t have a cast full of Americans eh?, or the majority of the thick and stupid youth of today will think the yanks breached the dams and invented the ‘bouncing bomb’, like the other movie that told the world how they captured the ‘Enigma’ and helped us British out because we couldn’t do anything right!
Oh yeah after all the Americans did invent the flying didn’t they?, no wonder they don’t want display the aircraft below:D
sorry all got carried away!!
The Americans inventing flying? have you forgotten the Mongolfiers brothers(ok that was a hot air balloon) & what about Otto Lillenthal?
Sir George Cayley I suspect.
AHH George Cayley built gliders, whilst Mr Stringfellow (Sheffield born)built one powered by a small steam engine which actually flew-albeit across the top floor of a textile mill he owned-some time in the 1870’s:cool:
I am actually thinking about listing it, just to see who bites:D
A)have you listed it yet? B)any takers?:D ๐ ๐
Hi everybody!
I still need your help to get Gordon Brown to re-recognise Sept 15th as Batlle of Britain Day.
Please sign my petition at http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/battleofbritain
