A small demo of what can be done with photoshop, not mine I hasten to add (I wish) but I’m sure the artist wont mind me using it to demonstrate.
How could anyone say this is not art just because its digital

    Paul C

That is very true, how do you define & judge what is or is not art? I build model kits to a decent standard, but those you see displayed at shows knock spots off my efforts & are definitly 3D works of art in there own right-i.e. paintings but on a different 3 dimentional “canvas”.

PLEAS READ THIS THREAD IF YOU CAN HELP!!!

Next year sees the 70th ann of the forming of 616(South Yorkshire)Sqn who were formed at Doncaster Airport in Nov 1938.

Although I have not as yet approached the Aeroventure committee about my idea to comemerate the event I would like to put out the feelers for a “long shot” request.

My idea is to have a short term display at Doncaster between June & Nov 2008 of a Merlin Spitfire (replica or real!!),Mk 4 & Mk 8 Meteors finished in(temporary) 1940,1944,1957 colour schemes.Aircraft to be kept in a secure hangar. 616 Sqn hold their annual reunion in June & formed Nov 1938.

ARE THERE ANY GROUPS/MUSEUMS out there who would consider loaning their a/c for such a display please?I am seriously looking for sponsorship if the project is feaseable.

I would be a wonderful gesture for surviving members of 616 on such an Historic occasion bearing in mind its unique history & famous pilots who flew with them.

    this is a serious request!!!!

For those not in the know,616 sqn was the last of the pre-war Auxillary sqns to be formed. It was initially a bomber sqn flying Harts, but its role was quickly changed to a fighter unit.

After using gauntlets for a time it soon operated Spitfires seeing action during the evacuation of Dunkirk & the Battle of Britain-during that battle it played a major part in the “battle of Flamboro’ Head”. 1941 saw it become part of Douglas Bader’s Tangemere wing- a role carried on until 1944.During this period it was the 1st sqn to operate the Mk VI Spitfire finishing with the VII.

Shortly after D-Day 616 was given a great accolade & made RAF history by becoming the 1st to operate Meteors-& was the only allied unit to use jets in WW II.The sqn was disbanded at the wars end,but reformed in 1948, first with Mosquito nf 30’s & again with Meteor III’s & IV’S-finally to be disbanded in 1957 whilst operating Meteor F.8’s. .

Among its most noted pilots & contemperaries were:- J.E.”Jonnie” Johnson-highest scoring allied ace,H.L.”Cocky” Dundas,L “Buck” Casson-all who served in the Spitfire years,D.Barry & “Dixie” Dean -both noted early Meteor pilots credited with V.1 kills.

I appolgise for the extra bumph, but sadly the 616 Sqn’s members get fewer by the years-I beleive there are only 3 Spitfire pilots left.At the end of the day it is I feel it is important to honour & say thank-you to these extra-ordinary”ordinary blokes ” on thier own turf whilst the chance is there.

AeroVenture has a Meteor T7, which is currently under long term restoration & will not be ready for next year. The cost of a replica Spitfire is beyond thier budget so as I stessed earlier if those Museums/ collecters out there who own the aircraft required may be willing to help, send me a P.M. please

Thank you for taking the time to read tis thread-Radpoe Meteor.

I am pushing this thread again to see if any individual or museum(s) may be in a position to help. I stress again as I appreaciate that it may sound like a phenomenal task, but all I ask is for someone to consider a short term loan of a replica Spitfire &/ Meteor F4/F8 please. If you can, please p.m. me.

Just doing a search on goggle earth with the addon for old ww2 raf bases. I am saddened to see the condition of some of the old airbases but I was surprised by Sculthorpe! IS this the most intact non aircraft active ww2 base left now?

Biscester is/was a good candidate the last time I went near in 2004 & although the runways have now gone Newton is pretty intact.

😀 Hmmmm…how low can you go?……….wasn’t it a certain P/O Prune that said” I flew so low I had to stand up to look above the crests of the waves”:D 😀 :diablo:

There is a photo I have seen of a Spitfire taken at a particular British aircraft factory that was so low, I estimate the prop tips were less than 4 feet( old money) off the deck, also what made the shot more impressive was it was taken from the tower looking down:eek: 😎

Never did find out who the pilot was…………honest:D 😀 😀

I’ve seen Klimov, DB and RR engines along side each other.

The Klimov was simple but well built, the DB was over engineered such as needle bearings where clam shell would have been just as good, and the RR engine with 40 technical manuals.

It always appears the the British would bolt something together and hope it would work.

And more often or not it did-ie we didn’t start the industrial revolution for nowt:D

On that wonderful train of thought, I would like to offer for sale on ebay next week this item:

    Shard of aluminium.
    Starting Price £0.99P
Item ends 6 days and 3 hours
This shard of aluminium wreckage was once a Heinkel He111P flown by Kg 55 it was shot down on the 12th July 1940, and crash landed at Hipley Hant’s.
Recycled and made into a Spitfire that was itself shot down and force landed in France in 1942.

It was recovered by the German authorities and made into several thousand mess tins for the Wehrmacht. One of those messcans was melted down in 1947 and used in the manufacture of a teapot.
The teapot was sold in britain and remained in service untill 1962. it was then scrapped and ended up in the rear quarter panel of a short wheel base Land Rover.

As with all land Rover’s, the chassis rusted and the bodywork was scrapped. The aluminium from the rear quarter panel was melted down and used in part towards a greenhouse frame. You are bidding for a shard of aluminium from a 1982 greenhouse that contains minute particals of air that Nelson once breathed and also has minute particals of auminium from a 1940 Heinkel 111 and a Spitfire…as well as a Land Rover.
Unfortunately, I cannot provide providence to substanciate this wild outrageous claim!
    😀

    😀 😀 would you take ten bob & a rabbit????:D

In 1940, when the P-38 was in flight testing and the P-51 was being designed, the Allison did indeed produce more power than the (then current) Merlin 60… and the Merlin had only a single-stage supercharger.*

Fast forward 2 years, and the Merlin had its 2-stage SC and produced more power. The Allison’s turbo-supercharger was still getting its bugs worked out, and the P-51 wasn’t set to get the TSC anyway.

Two more years, and the Allisons in the P-38J/L were again producing more power than the Merlin… and the TSC was working acceptably.

Then RR came out with the Griffon… and the scales tipped again.

It all depends on just when you do your comparison.

    * technicalities are from memory… which may be faulty… YMMV

Ah but, had the Spitfire & possibly the Hurricane been fitted with the Griffon in 1940 the Battle of France may have been desisive for the allies & the losses to the Luftwaffe so great that the Battle of Britain might not have happened!!!
