Has anyone been to see the old Battle HQ across the road from Binbrook? I remember having a look at it in 1986 but it was flooded with water and you could only climb down a couple of ladder rungs.
I haven’t as yet,but its fate is similar to that of the old 12 Group Fighter Command H.Q. at Watnall in Notts.Full of water & nobody seems to care about its importance.
On speaking to someone at the HGV centre at Watnall it had been pumped out a number of years ago by the fire service so the RAF could remove some equipment from there.(took 4 days apparently:eek: )He went on to say that it was told it is still prety complete down there with the gallery windows still intact:eek: 😮 .
Unfortunatly now in both cases to dive & explore the would only be allowed by licenced cave divers.
Has anyone got any photo’s of this Meteor please
There was/is a Meteor F.8 on the ATE ranges in South Wales along with the mortal remains of a Canberra B.6
IF anybody has a photo/photo’s of the Meteor F8 at Sennybridge,Wales, can you please let me know.:D
many thanks- Radpoe Meteor:) 🙂
The Whirlwind looks to be very much in the scheme of the Aeroventure example – HMS Protector Flight ?
The colour scheme certainly appears to be that of Aeroventures example, but I cannot say whether H.M.S. Endurance’s aircraft wore the same.
The other problem is Protector flight used 4 Whirlwinds(two of which are at Donny(HAS.1 & HAR.9),and I don’t know if the other two used piston or turboshaft engines.
If anyone can confirm if it is Aeroventures, then let me know please.:)
NAaa that was a Yorkshireman:D
Is that Mr Stringfellow I presume?:D 😀
Due to the interest shown regards Robmac’s drawings a suggestion has been made to have a virtual gallery on the forum.Personally I like the idea- how about some feedback?:)
On a similar vein, I have mentioned on the Phantom thread that I have toyed with the idea of having an exhibition at Doncaster Aeroventure (although they don’t know that yet! just an idea at the moment)-if anyone is interested then let me know please & I will see if it can come to fruition.:) 🙂 😮
Wow,what we’ve seen so far very good-the more I see,the more I want to push for an exhibition.keep ’em coming.:D 😀
reminds me somewhat of the complete wellington tail section in moreton in the marsh 🙂
Funny you should mention that one, that was recovered by S.Yorkshire Aircraft Museum prior to going there.:D
Planning to spend most of this Wednesday at the RAF Museum down the road from me taking photos – just wondering if anyone had anything they’d like photographing? Unfortunately because of the opening times i’ll have to go early for the Claude Grahame White hangar, personally I prefer leaving the best stuff till last but don’t have much choice!
Cheers, Rob
I have probably left it too late, but can you get a nice one of the Sunderland for me at some time please?:)
Sadly one of my uncles died this week & not only was he Royal Signals attached to the RAF at Pembroke on them, but he was a trustee of this A/C when it was displayed there. (he actually rigged one of the turrets up so that when you pressed the trigger, the sound of machine guns could be heard, whether this feature has been been removed,I don’t know).
O.K. it is not a complete aircraft by any means but unless it has gone, there is a village in the Lincs/Notts/S.Yorks area that has the bombay floor Geodetics from a Wellington(or Warwick???) being used as a fence-“summat diffrent” for a change.
N.B I HAVE SEEN THIS ONE WITH MY OWN EYES:rolleyes:

I know there are a number of other artists on this forum who may be interested in an exhibition you’d be surprised at the wealth of talent out there, how about a forum art exhibition?Robmac
Good work I agree with all the other comments Join the Guild, always lots of good advice etc I too only ever painted for my own pleasure until I joined a local aviation art group and recently the guild, now I get involved in exhibitions etc and get a great deal of satisfaction from talking aircraft/art with a wide variety of people and occasionally sell a few to boot.
eHangar is also a great place to get advice and guidance from
Keep up the good workPaulC
I like the idea of forum gallery:) 🙂 ,however how many people love to see the art “in the flesh”?- if there are enough of you out there who relish the prospect of showing off your artwork, let me know & I will see what I can come up with at Doncaster- after all what better setting than among aircraft.:) 🙂
I have been drawing pictures now for a very long time and have been pestered by various people that my artwork is worth selling, so I want your opinion on this subject.
You have all probably seen this picture before but not this way. I drew this over the last few days and thought it would be interesting to see what you all thought of it. Please let me know and be honest.
Thanks
Rob.
I looked at the Hunter & thought not too bad,saw these the Nimrod, & Typhoon & thought” for G**s sake man get yersen in the Guild of aviation artists”-there is a lot of budding av. artists out there & these are some of the best I’ve seen.:) Best of luck an’ keep it up.
p.s. I have toyed with the idea of Organising an aircraft art exhibition at Donny Aeroventure for some time -would you be interested?:)
No, absolutely not, but it was a drastic measure to prevent the deterioration of morale.

In many ways LMF mirrored & replaced the Firing squads of WWI,but the effect was stronger on the individual affected,i.e. If you were shot, you would no longer suffer the stigma but your family would, whereas with LMF as it has already been pointed out the individual suffers.
That said,I agree that A, it was grossly unfair & B, it was drastic but prevented a trickle becoming a flood.
Just a thought, but how many of us visit “other” museums,ie those NOT connected to aviation? for instance The National Army Museum, local regimental museums etc? These tend to show far more human history than most aviation museums. To be honest many aircraft museums leave me cold, too many aircraft,or lumps of aircraft, and not nearly enough of the human story being told.
Garry.
We are slowly trying to address this one at Doncaster, currently we have a history of the Blitz in Sheffield, the city’s industrial involvement 1939-45. Boards are displayed depicting the stories & experiences of ethnic minorities & local ex service personel who served in world war two.
Two of Doncaster’s own Squadrons have story boards of their histories, along with units from surrounding airfields.
There is also a 25th anniversary display for the Falklands war,( which along with the restored Gazelle-shot down in San Carlos water)has personal issue items, photo’s & stories from those who served down there.
Over the years while researching for many of these human stories,a few veterans are quite happy to give their accounts, but understandably, a high number, essepecially those who have had bad experiences are reluctant to tell thier story.Regrettably as the years march on & more pass away, the opportunity to gather the info is lost.
I am lucky in my line of work as I take many elderly patients to hospital, but once they find out I am ex- RAF then I often get some wonderful annecdotes.
One of the most touching and saddest was an eastern european who was unable to talk much because they were so ill.Whilst I examined them,I saw the number tattoed under their arm that said enough for me to know they had been in a concentation camp(Dachau, if memory serves me well) .
I must admit, at the time I got a lump in my throat and a tear in my eye,as I could only imagine the horrors they went through, but it just goes to show it takes more than words to tell a story.
… and I will say it again, you guys are doing a terrific job and should be commended for your efforts in returning the lost crews to their families if possible.
Regarding the halifax, would it not be possible to scan over the wreck wth sonar and then pick out certain areas to investigate?Hmmm a lancaster centre section? I know someone who would be interested in that.
SO DO I!!!;) 😉 😉
