Thanks Mark12 for posting that photo, great to see the two comparisons of then and now.
Flt. Lt. Rowe-Evans really was a delightful gentleman, really fascinating listening to him earlier on today.

Hi Andy,
I take on board your views but I’m sorry but it still angers me.
Yes I’ll mark the separate days but I remember veterans every day, not just from the Second World War but from other conflicts too.
We need to move on, but for us to grow as a nation we need to learn from our history. Thats why I thought that next year would be probably the final big commeration, simply as the veterans are getting older, and we are at peace within Europe, so why continue to remind our now friends in Germany that we were once enemies?

I just feel so angry and sad. Ok time has moved on, but next year would have probably been the last time that we would have really commerated VE and VJ day.
As I’ve said in posts before I am very lucky that in my line of work (the nursing profession) I have met some wonderful people, and had some very interesting history lessons from those that were there.
My thanks as always goes to those men and women that fought for our freedom. You are not forgotten, your memory still lives on.
Take care,
Danni aka Snaps
Well here’s some photos of today, some of the aircraft, some of Flight Lieutenant Adrian Rowe-Evans, who flew this aircraft whilst he was stationed in Hong Kong. He flew this particular aircraft in the Queens Birthday Fly Past in April 1955. I have also included a shot of the conservation team, without whose dedication this restoration would not have been possible. As you can see they have done a wonderful job!
Hope you enjoy these photo’s

Avro’s Finest,
Couldn’t have put it better myself! I just rambled, but boy I was angry!

Will try to around 9pm after I’m done some of my favourite household task – the ironing!

This is just totally unbelievable. Coherant words are beyond me right now!
Don’t some of us have enough of a struggle getting our kids taught about the Second World war in the first place at some schools. I know some are better than others, but my neice has learnt about the Romans for 4 years now – she asked her history teacher about the Second World War as she knew a veteran, who lives locally and she was given a detention for questioning her elders!
My neices face when she met some of the Battle of Britain veterans a couple of months ago was an absolute picture. She thanked them for what they did, and asked them questions that they have heard time and time again, but each of the veterans took the time to talk to her, a memory she will, and does cherish.
How can this Government have the gall to change these historical dates? For their holiday! 🙁 As I said I’m so angry. I guess I will try and resolve this in my own way, by marking the occassion in some way at work, as I look after some wonderful people. How am I going to tell them tomorrow that their anniversary as they know it, doesn’t exist next year? Good job those brave men and women did not have the same attitude 60 years ago.
Has this Government got any respect left for those that fought for this country? And of course, for those that continue to do so? (but that’s another subject altogether)
Sorry this is a long reply but this is something I feel very strongly about, as you can probably tell 🙂

Did anyone go to the Spitfire Roll Out today at Duxford? The weather was a little iffy but I still managed to take over 100 photos! 😀

Future Pilot I can understand what you are saying and you raise valid points but I just find this time of year hard to deal with for 2 reasons 1) my dog is so scared of the loud noises and 2) some of the things I have seen in my line of work (the nursing profession) I wouldn’t wish on anyone.
So if I hadn’t got any pets to worry about and was in a different job, then maybe I would go and see a nice firework display, as its not the organised displays that I have got the problem with! and no I’m not tarnishing all other members of the public with the label of firework hooligans but unfortunately the few spoil it for the majority.
Hope you had a good evening though, 🙂

Sorry for the loss of your friend. I guess people feel that they have no other options available to them, that the emotional hole that they find themselves in is too deep to get out of.
Family, friends etc are the ones left wondering ‘I didn’t know that they were feeling down/that they had problems, and why couldn’t they come to us for help?’.
Suicide is something very emotive, some people view it as selfish (for those left behind), whereas some people say it must be hard to choose to end your own life, and by jumping in front of a train, its a definate signall that that’s what you want to happen. In these type of cases I wonder what level of emotional help is available to the train drivers?
As I said earlier, sorry for your loss,

After my day at work I’d ban them, apart from organised displays. No I am not a party pooper but argh….not going there as I’ll rant and then get proverbally shot down for it! 🙁
Have a safe night and for those of you going or holding a fireworks display, have a great evening.

Heah it can be frightening at this time of year for those elderly people that were around during the war years, I am surrounded by elderly people who do not like this time of year.
It does not make me a killjoy or any such thing. All I was saying was that my dog is terrified of the loud bangs, and so are some of the people I care for.
A proper display or ones organised by sensible people can look fantastic, and yes I have been at displays were I have participted in the oohs and ahhhs of sheer enjoyment, but my personal view is that it goes on for too long.
Kev35 I’m with you on this one. A couple of years ago as we were travelling along a busy road a fiirework was thrown directly at our car. I and my husband have never been so frightened, but thankfully we were able to remain in control of the car.

Yes I agree with you. I am fed up of them going off in July, August, September, October and November (and probably in December too). We have a dog who is petrified of them, we live near people who have young children, old people who think they are back in the Blitz, who get disturbed when they go off, not just early evening but recently we had a 30 minute display at 3.00am! 😡
As you can tell I can stand on my soap box when it comes to this subject adn I have written to our local MP about it as its not fun anymore.
Sorry for the rant! 🙂

Yeah I’d love to walk a Great White! can you imagine the conversations you’d have? (just a shame they aren’t equipped with legs though so I’d have to swim with it during its daily exercise regime! – um sharks in lycra! 😀
Oh what fun, thanks guys you’ve sent my imagination into overdrive! 😀

Words fail me right now, as it’s been said before these people have got to be sick to do this sort of thing.
This stuff not only makes me very angry it also makes me sad. Sad not only for those whose sacrifice we are remebering but also for those veterans still alive. What must they think?
Words are still beyond me.
