A 453 Squadron Spitfire IX during the time it was commanded by another Aussie former Spit XII pilot, S/L Don Smith DFC, just prior to D-Day

Did a few Spits this week so just for fun and for your appraisal.
F/L Barney Newman’s Spitfire VIII from 79 Squadron RAAF in the summer of 1945. He has the Cross of Lorraine near the cockpit, apparently representing his time flying Spit XIIs with 41 Squadron in 43-44.

I’m glad I’m not alone in thinking Spitfire The History is a disappointment. Yes it’s a comprehensive work of reference, but it’s eminently unreadable.
An amazing amount of errors in captions and photo IDs too. It was a bit disapointing.

OK so I lied. I’ll be tired for work tomorrow, but once I got going on fixing a Spit to make this one work, I kept going. I hope this is close to what you were looking for Laurie.
Let me know if and what needs to be fixed. Thanks to Mark V I think I’ve got the roundel and fin flash colors closer to the truth 🙂

Hi Laurie,
I’ll see what I can do. I’m working the next three days then out of town for three more but I’ll post it when I get it done.
Dan
Mustang would have to be the Kermit Weeks P51C
Spitfire would have to be Mk II P7350 as that’s the one that I was lucky enough to get inside while at the 41 Squadron reunion in 1986. It’s been 17 years but I can still feel it 🙂
Dan
And one more just for fun. I love day’s off.
Dan
Here ya go Geoff. This is Andrew’s effort. He’s not quite 20.
Dan
Not sure I’m up to bombers yet. Kinda of a fighter boy myself 🙂
I’ll pass on the compliment to my son. I’ll see if he wants a shot at the JG52 profile too. He’s working off my template so I’ll take some credit 🙂
OK here’s my attempt at the JG52 E4
Dan
My son’s attempt. He’s better at it then me.

Dan,I’ve only just realised that the crest you’ve used is that of the current Bexley London Borough. The crest on AD554 would have been that of the Bexley Metropolitan Borough, which ceased to exist in 1965.
If you hold fire on the profiles of ‘BEXLEY’, I will get a copy of the old crest for you next week and post it here. I still feel that the crest on ‘BEXLEY’ is white, as I can’t see any variance in tone to indicate a different colour.
Geoff.
That explains it 🙂 I’ll wait for the older crest. Easy enough to duplicate and ‘shrink to fit” so to speak. I’d agree that the color is lighter then I used.
Dan
Geoff, this is the Bexley town crest that I found on line. If you look close at the photo of Doll in the cockpit, you can make out the blue lines, the horse on top of the castle, etc. Obviously it’s not completely the same but since I don’t have a close up of the one one the Bexley Spit, I modified it based on this as best I could. There must be some color although I don’t know what the shapes outside of the crest are that look white. Any chance it wasn’t complete at the time the photo was taken of Chris on the cockpit?
Dan
I’ll see what I can do Geoff. Probably later today sometime
Dan
Close up of the cockpit area. I went hunting for the Bexley town crest and it appears that what is below the cockpit is a form of this. So I went with it 🙂
I also put the mirror on top of the canopy as it appears it was moved at some point.

First attempt of Chris Doll’s “Bexley”
Now the fixed 2nd attempt with the correct nose camo
