I wonder how many Global Hawks the US have got wandering the skies over Lybia monitoring and Helping identify possible targets?
You could apply for the Enterprise as the Smithsonian no longer want it as they are getting Discovery when it gets back from orbit.
However a petition from Star Trek fans might put pay to that.
curlyboy
wasnt the Enterprise just a shell ?.I seem to remember talk of them fitting her out for use after the Challenger disaster but dont know if they did or not ?
I remember nipping out from work many many moons ago to see the NASA B747 with I think it was Enterprise on the back as she did four passes and a roller at Manchester Airport. I think I am right in saying it was the first time one had been seen outside the USA.I think buried in my files I have the photo’s of the actual event(or they could be on slide). Not sure if I can find them in a short space of time but will have a dig over the weekend if the interest is still bubbling.
Wonder where it would have landed….a 5 mile strip on Salisbury Plain I suppose?
Just to update on this we actually had two designated sites in the UK for emergency landing of the Shuttle.
Greenham Common and Elvington !!!!!
Be very interesting to see anyway.
Hopefully making a trip up to you soon with herr Dr!
Do you guys still have to get your passports stamped at the Wales/England border ?.
Would relish the chance. The sooner the better, as work v.v.v quiet at the moment, and have the time…. :diablo:
If you want a real change of scenary you could always come down and help rebuild some Spitfires in North Yorkshire.Whilst you are waiting perhaps to help with a Growler
You Yorkshire men are absolutely amateurs for being tight compared to some Aberdonians I know……
get your facts right who was it invented the word Tight ?. A Yorkshireman.
Where did they end up sending the Shack for its major upgrades and overhauls because no one else had the umph to do it ?. THE GREATER YORKSHIRE EMPIRE
You Scotsmen keep to chasing Haggis (poor things cant even defend themselves roaming free in the glenns until some herbert in a skirt chases after them shouting incoherent words ending for the most in Hey You Jimmy ).
I’d have to say ‘snap’ there James, but the Manc one is closest!
If and when it happens you may be nearer the right end of the country for putting it back together then !!!!.
Precisely at least your post has maintained interest in the type and a bit of info on the other Shacks about, never a bad thing and I’m glad you see the posts in the spirit that they are meant.:)
Personally I would love to get my hands dirty on a Shack again.
Thats good I have your name down as a team leader then ?.
XF700 is surely beyond redempton, delivered for fire practice in ’71 and stripped for spares by an MU, not to mention being on Cyprus must make it almost unviable.
I know which one my money is on![/QUOTE]
Already answered on this one NO CHANCE or the ladies that flew in are now nearly as bad souveneir hunters have smashed them up.May be a spares source if we all ganged together but I dont think that Nashio will need any ?.Not with all the stuff that they have got at Coventry I might be asking them for bits.
Interesting times… Firebex I bet you wish you’d just pm’d Rich or Ben about the ap’s now, instead of all this speculation! 😀
Yep sure do.Perhaps you will have top come over to Ripon to cure the curiosity I can also tell you some stories about your lady going down the line at Woodford along with 18 others.Yes I worked on her as well another story but suffice to say we stripped them dispatched them all except the cockpit sections to Chadd where they got extensive re work before coming back to us for re assembly. The cockpit retained the ID the rest got nailed on the back of it what ever turned up first. Your aeroplane on its test flight in the hands of Tony Blackman came back minus a flap (thought she was flying like a dog he said) swiftly followed by an irate farmer on the bell from near Macclesfield this large thing had decended from the clouds it had (UFO maybe) right in the middle of his best milkers it did(you can guess what it was).Anyway sorry I divest or is it digress ?.
It all keeps the interest going though doesnt it .I hope if it comes to fruition all you lot are going to be in an orderly que to help dismantle the beast.I will supply the teas and coffee’s and maybee the odd pint of amber nectar (thats more than the victor crew get I have heard, rumour Andre has got deep pockets these days !!!!).
Dont forget guys down in the colonies now .They have found a new use for all those digging skills learnt over the years soak aways for all that water but the authorities cant tell them that they have to suggest buried treasure and aeroplanes.Saves the tax payer millions !!!!!!
Well they bl00dy well not getting ours.. 🙂
Hey dont discount it to soon those mine shafts go every where you know .
You might open up one morning to find a hole 30 feet accross a big shaft and your Spitfire on the front pages as an underground aircraft store having been found under Oakey !!!!
Being displayed by seven dwarfs and a protest by the indigenous population of Oz threatening to use it as a boomerang !!!
Cosford has been mentioned as a possible eventual resting place for a Growler ,not suggesting for a minute that is a possible location but I have read recently others may also have done that as part of our Glorious governments cuts Cosford could even be in doubt as to having a future. They are now in panic mode spending millions one one hand to recover spares for a type then announcing that it is going to be withdrawn very soon following the Harrier.I think that aircraft in museum and even the Growler could have a new lease of life now that Nimrod has been converted to pepsi cans. So come on guys get the Coventry aircraft flyable your country might need you very soon.
Good idea lets all go round collect up all the growlers we can find get them working and sell them back to HMG and make us all millionaires !!!.
There aint no Nimrod,The Airbus AWACS is going to follow before long and the US want their sentries back. What we going to use? Growlers Simples !!!!!
At least Shack spares are available and a new set of spar booms is a snip at £75k the BBMF bought a number of sets to use and alter for the Lanc.
Oooooo Betty its all exciting stuff this isnt it ????.
Some warm some cool some hot some scalding but not in any order !!!! and some even refrigerated suggestions.
I will let you know if and when it is to happen there is a lot of things to sort out first.namely the feasibility of moving one or possibly more machines and the costs involved .Confirming its/their new home and of course our principle reaching agreement with the current owner/owners. Of course I will also let you know if it does’nt .(maybe if I can).
A lot to get I’s dotted and T’s crossed but I think we have nearly explored all the likely candidates still in existance except perhaps the one still in the USA and it aint that one. What about all the ones in South Africa anyone got any info on those including the one that sadly did the wheels up in the desert she is not badly damaged and still fairly intact except for the odd native who might have had a sleep in it.
