What happened to the ex Humbrol Hunter that was abandoned outside the factory near Hull for ages then apparantly someone got the gop ahead to remove it.Is it safe ?
Last week on TV Top Gear upwards of 30 plus various model Migs rotting in Albania.Filmed last September apparantly.
Lots of stuff lying on airfields in Eastern Europe.
Sadly not much to be found in the UK anymore.

Did you not get the Peregrine AP? 😮
R-R Derby Heritage Center is the place to go, and speak with the archive chap…

Thanks Stu
Got it on the other screen whilst I type this. Also now have a group member who is
a member of Heritage so hoping to get further details with his help.
Also just today have received an offer and a very cheap quote to re create
the three blade prop assemblies and spinners in GRP (its the easiest way to go
we did it on the RBL Spitfire and from 5 feet away you could not differentiate
they even rotated at reasonable speed because they balanced so well).
The same people will also make us exhaust stubs if needed.(they even rust !!!!
as they put metal filings in the glass mix).

Why cant both work together for the same ultimate aim ?.
We are looking to build an example from scratch original items recovered by wreckologists (is that the right term ?).Could be very important in such a project.
sorry have I missed a Them and US theme in this forum ?.
Thank you for the referal back to page 4 there are a lot of links and pages to read back over and it will I am sure take a good few readings to extract all the gems and detail hidden within.
Is that the 137 Sqn (SF- ) Whirlwind ???
I have got two photo@s of downed Whirlwinds one looks like SF@H the other is not very clear there are no codes visible and there is no really decernable background as such just a lot of what appear to be German Airforce personnel looking all over it.
There is also a report that four of 137 squadrons Whirlwinds got shot down in a big dog fight with twenty BF109’s.This was during the operations against the German capital ships Scharnhorst,Gneisenau and Prinz Eugen but it does not say much more so I assume the were lost over water ?.
Another route to take if she is a replica is to make up dummy engines..Here is a 3D model of a Db601 done by my good mate Dave from Shuttleworth.I hope he doesn,t mind and will remove it if he does..
These models can be exported into a CNC Mill and instead of using Aluminium, use high density foam and cover in resin, paint and then fit with all the ancilleries. You would only need one made to use as a pattern or have one shown with open cowlings.Yes alli airframe would be the go 🙂
Is there enough info and outlines on a Perrigrine to be able to do it ?.
[QUOTE=MrBlueSky;1703690]Big Guns, thats what you need…
Steve Vizard is one to get on your side, contact him here:
http://www.airframes.co.uk/contact.aspx
Thanks I have thought of Steve I have not spoken to him for many years. But I have dealt with Mark etc down there for Spit bits.I know he is very busy.
I actually thought he or one of his guys was on this forum ?.
Will drop him a line and see where it leads.
I have read that a Whirlwind went down in Bonnie Scotland and made a hole 30 feet deep .Does anyone know anything about it and if anything was recovered or has anything ever been recovered ?.
I think it was mentioned as being near Stirling ?.
I was thinking engines or tail section as from that deep a hole I dont think recongniseable bit sof much else might exist.
Chris should be recomended for his work not kicked in the nuts by some office herbert who really does not know what he is talking about and is being instructed by persons who know even less
Looks great.
I have some Lanc drawings from when I was at a certain establishment and they were throwing out. I have some detailed stuff on front turret area also I found another set of arm rest pads for the pilots seat you are welsome to have them if it helps .
PM if any good.
Mike
now there’s an idea,i cant help out in the flesh but i’d buy one to help raise funds(now where to put a 1/24th whirlwind :dev2:)
Now then some very constructive suggestions guys.
The CAD drawings etc is a damn good one to help with the real finished thing.Having done reconstructions with wooden frames then metal skin and also full thing all metal I would go for the Latter every time the amount of effort that goes into producing a wooden frame is roughly similar to the metal version plus the metal version is lighter and not prone to damage due to damp etc.
A scale model to raise funds is also a damn good idea ,do we not have some input from a couple of guys involved with the moulds or friends of the guys ?.
Its getting someone to be willing to run a batch off and I think that we would have to commit to a minimum run this is were we could run into problems.
I do have contacts for Special T shirts and baseball caps etc at a damn good price so perhaps this would be a good fund raiser.
Yes building an aircraft in memory of Shed mans efforts goes without saying and we think it would be a good idea to have a plaque of some description on the finished aircraft in memory of him and creidt due as he is the main man who got us all so steamed up and showed the way.
Some one has been talking about costs and is it a realistic goal ?.
I have done a bit of research and the first two prototypes it is claimed got built for £29,500 each. Now if you bear in mind complete with its transporter trailer we built the RBL spitfire for not much different to that four years ago.The whirlwind is from memory 3 feet longer than a Spit and about 9 feet bigger in the wing span . So a full aircraft without engines and props is we estimate going to cost in materials and overheads about £40-45K labour free.
and start cutting metal back end of this year in the region of 4 -5 years build time. With the cost spread over a few years its not going to cost that much to acheive a free standing aircraft and if someone out there is feeling generous and wants one for their collection its easy to cut metal for two at the same time as it is for one and the material cost comes down slightly also.
The starting point would be the cockpit and nose section,Rear Fuselage,Tail Fuselage,Centre Section finally out main planes. So not all materials would be wanted at once the cockpit and nose could be built structure only with skinning on a pretty reasonable budget.
Some food for thought here guys we are willing to give input in between and whilst we are doing other projects and house the build but obviously we need support etc from all interested parties in a Whirlwind Fighter.
What do we think guys ?.Do we start a supporters club or what ?,how do we go about it,how would we raise the funds etc ?,would we have some form of Pay Pal account for funds raised and donated ?.Would we have some form of committee etc, etc, (We would prefer not to hold the funds jjust to request as needed)
Hey Ebay what about the TU-95 atom bomb capable bomber recently for sale or the Hind Gun ships that according to the vendor you are not allowed to fly but would very easily start up and OOPS !!!!!!!. A lot of other aircraft especialy the ones on Ebay USA and what about the Warbirds are they not technicaly weapons.
So if they follow the lette rof their rules you are not allowed to advertise anything that could be used as a weapon that just about covers most of the things advertised depending how high you can lift the object and throw it !!!
We have bought aircraft on Ebay that if they where really applying a no weapons rule should not have even been there to start with.
The Harrier belonging to Chris is basicaly empty of any looms and systems as I understand it.
The last aircraft we bought was the Soko Kraguj that has everything in it including the gun sight and all the wiring and systems. In a matter of a couple of hundred hours if the wings and engine were fitted all t you have to do is install 2 7.62 mm machine guns two rocket pods and two 20 kg bombs and you have a fully functional ready to kick 7 shades out of your next door neighbour.
Chris would need to spend about 5,000 hours minimum and a lot of money and equipment that is just not available to even get his harrier to taxi and fly let alone shoot anyone.
The flying Flea we bought off ebay is more a weapon than the Harrier at least it would fly and I could drop something on some poor sods head from 50 feet up !!!!!.
I think personaly there is more to this because there happens to be a large number of Harriers currently up for sale to who ever is acceptable to HMG and the US,it stinks E-Bay !!!!
