So did the production line for the F-15C/D for the US Air Force a few decades ago. So did the production line for other aircraft never exported outside the US such as the B-2, F-117 etc. No comparison really.

    No comparison?

You are aware that this a first in seventy years?
The P-51D didnt outproduce the F-86, who didnt outproduce the century fighters line, who didnt outproduce the F-4 Phantom, who didnt outproduce the F-15 Eagle…
If you said that by reason of political interference (no exports policy by example, thats a first for the primary USAF air defence fighter since the creation of the USAF) the Raptor production line was curtailed, that would be correct, but “not comparable”? On that you are wrong, a comparison with with its predecessors its eminently sensible.
The obvious question his why in the hell wasnt the Raptor allowed to be exported to Japan and South Korea, two allied countries who expressely asked for it? Because of security issues? If thats the answer then is a lousy one…

Its ironic that the production line of the “ATF” (program for the sucessor of the Eagle, AKA F-22 Raptor) just closed a few days ago.

Congratulations to LM (and a bit of a slap to Boeing).
Never quite understood why Boeing didnt offer the “Silent Eagle, the official reason, “they already have Eagles and want another type of airframe in case something goes wrong” his strange (to say the least).

BTW… The wind tunnel model on the left in Kramer’s picture… Is that not the P.106 ?

    It seems so.

Are the countries currently buying the F 16 expect to keep it for 30 to 40 years or is it just an interim solution?
Once the USAF no longer operate the type I hardly see LM making much upgrade and Oman will likely have to ask the Israeli for upgrades. I hope they are in good terms…

The USAF is planning to use the Viper at least till the late thirties.

    aviation and defence journalists

Well…after reading so much trash, over and over again from aviation journalists, I would not difference them from a sci-fi writters…actually, the latter can be a more credible source…

Well! Thats a bit of exageration, dont you think?

So, its only fair to imagine that you consider yourself more knowledgeable than the typical chap who works for Flight Global or key Publishing, i am right?
Do you have a solid number of texts available publicly about aerospace so that we (the interested amateurs) can compare with the typical Aviation Journo from the likes of Janes, AWeek or Air et Cosmos?

Having learned a lot (and having a jolly good time at it) from reading the likes of Roy Braybrook, Bill Sweetman, Henri Pierre Groleau, Jon Lake, Stephen Trimble, Craig Hoyle, etc, i do find a bit disturbing that i have been reading nothing more than Sfi-Fi for the last three decades!
On the other hand i do like Isaac Asimov, Frank Herbert, etc, and thinking on the texts of Bill Sweetmans about Aurora around the nineties i do concede that you might have a point.

There are a few chaps who are not professional (well at least i think they are not) “writers” who have a very solid number of texts who can look straight in the eye of the best aviation journos, (think Sean O´Connor IMINT & Analysis, Scorpion descriptions of the Eurofighter Typhoon, Kovy work at rafalenews.blogspot.com, etc, etc) but they are not many

    Cheers

Is not the question more of what will replace the F-16 in air defence? According to the report I’ve read, the deal price for 10 single seat and 2 dual seat F-16’s was $600 million ie $50 million per frame.

‘Announcing the deal in a 14 December contract notification, the US Department of Defense said Muscat will acquire 10 single-seat fighters and a pair of two-seat trainers under a deal worth $600 million.’

    http://www.flightglobal.com/news/articles/omani-f-16-deal-means-continued-wait-for-eurofighter-366030/
    .

The Omani Viper deal his not just 600 million.
The 600 million contract his between the US DOD and Lmartin for the aircrafts, a bit of logistical suport, manuals, etc (http://www.defense.gov/contracts/contract.aspx?contractid=4684).
Its normal that part of the equipment (the most common being the engines) being “Government funded items” to have separate contracts.
We are going to see another contract between the US DOD and PW or GE, a few more contracts with smaller firms, etc, all derived of the Omani order.
On top of that add the FMS 3,75% fee, and whatever extras (weapons, extra engines, extra radars, training etc) that the Omanis might want and you could easily double that.
To have an idea we would have to see (we wont) the final contract between the US DOD and the Omani MOD, but this (http://www.dsca.mil/pressreleases/36-b/2010/Oman_10-40.pdf) will be undoutebly much closer to what the Omanis are going to pay.

I’m sorry to disagree with JW and PG, but it was always likely that Oman would augment its small Typhoon purchase (only 12-16 aircraft), as it was always part of an expansion programme and not simply one of re-equipment, and the F-16 was always the most likely beneficiary.

I hope you are right, but this November and December could very well be an horrible end of year for Eurofighter GMBH.
Losing Swiss to Gripen, a Viper sale in Oman, an almost certain acquisition of “Dave´s” in Japan and if Dassault wins India…

So all, or the majority of Eurofighter are two seat like Block two Rhinos?

Since when all the Block II Rhinos are twin seaters?! You are aware that a big part of the US Navy Block II Rhinos are “E”´s, right?

Of course external stores are an issue, but not as much as an issue as a large RCS airframe plus external stores.

And you have the RCS of these two particular aircrafts?
How well the radar blockers on the SH compare with the S ducted intakes of the Typhoon at supersonic speeds when the blocker vanes are entirely open?
How well compares the FSS materials in their respective radar redomes?
Etc, etc, etc… Without RCS charts you are just speculating.

Is that an artist’s paint based on the idea Swiss had ~20 years ago ?
It was posted somewhere in this thread, can’t remember name of project.
is there any links to that work ?

It was the ALR Piranha (in this case with two Larzac´s, but the final design was equiped with one Turbo Union RB199). In many ways was very similar design to the Gripen.
