A Gripen with a EJ200 could be the F16 of 4.5 gen in export numbers. If only SAAB had the vision and done it earlier.

It probably wouldnt make an iota of diference. I cant remember one single sale that SAAB lost because the aircraft had a lot of american components, quite the oposite, there were a few that they lost to Lockheed Martin…

Bottom line is that Alenia and EADS submitted offers last May, the others may have had issues with making an equally low bid or coping with the exagerated techical requirements, that’s another story. The rejection of the 2 bids, is purely a fault of our Procurements Bureau and the way that handled the bureaucratic parts of the law. If you ask me, the minister did well to cancell the bid, but he should have done better to replace the head of the bureau and change the 2006 law.

    Aspis

Dont worry, if we start making a list of the procurement f….-ups of each and every Defense MOD of every one that writes in this forum we will end with a pretty massive document!

Too much journalistic speculation and sauce for too little news…

    A bad habit of Defpro.
Portugal in 2006 signed a contract for 12 C-295, of wich five were of the MPA “Persuader” version with a FITS package. The cost of the complete program was 276 million Euros.
So, yes, unless the Hellenic Navy wanted the likes of the P-8 Poseidon, it was a realistic budget, actually it was dead on the C-295 and ATR-72 MPA versions.
And, by the way, if those 200/250 million Euros were by “Unit”, that matches almost exactly the FMS P-8 Poseidon sale to India!

That’s the point of the ToT, a made in brazil spare part would certainly be cheaper than made in France of the same goods.

Or not. That would depend on the “spare part” involved, and the number of “spare parts” produced. A small handfull of AESA antennas made in Brasil (or in Canada, Bahrein, Mars, whatever) would be bloody expensive.

    Cheers

Why is it that Britain seems to be the only nation held to account when it comes to past history and empires? What about France, Spain etc?
As a British person I feel no guilt whatsoever towards the empire and if that is the attitude that Indians have of the situation then we should stop the aid and point out that your people wouldn’t be starving if you spent your money more wisely.

Well, because most British dont hang out in Spanish, French, Portuguese, etc, foruns…
If they did, specially in history foruns, they would know that the “colonization syndrome” is a wide spread “flame”.

    Back to the topic… 😮

So, Eurofighter had to write “<90kN” 😉 😀

In that RR pdf its clearly staten that “Two EJ200 engines power the Eurofi ghter Typhoon achieving a combined thrust of over 40,000lbf” and that means at least 180 KN (unless the “over” means less than 1%).

    But, here you go:

ps- Can we say that the empty weight of the Rafale C equiped with an AESA set, is >10 ton, or that the “around” 1000 TR modules of the RBE2 AESA are actualy 863? 🙂

255 m/s might be close to the truth, especially with this delta sweep angle and without LEX!

its curious that the Typhoon official website give a
    >90kN on the eurojet 200 http://www.eurofighter.com/et_ap_pd_de.asp
and that RR gives 89kN http://www.rolls-royce.com/Images/EJ200_tcm92-6698.pdf

    typhoon website a fanboyism site?

how could specialists can put so many “>>>>” and so low accute datas!

    You are reminding me someone…

Yes, even without link16 (which is installable anyway), the Mirage2000-5 has datalink exchange up to 8 (maybe a bit more) aircrafts at the same time. Not sure about the non upgraded Mirage. Probably not.

No. The HAF Mirage 2000-5 mk2 uses a NATO standard JTIDS terminal (a link 16 terminal), it doesnt have any other type of Dlink. The status of the Thales Data Link for the UAE “-9” and “Desert Falcons” is unknown (at least for me) and thats about it.

I did find it, I just couldn’t seem to find it from the link you posted. But thanks for pointing it out, it’s a great article.

    Blimey, wrong link…

The correct one is here: http://www.zinio.com/reader.jsp?issue=416108193

Not even that. One PIRATE can do the work, but a fighter needs to circle around the target a bit to get a better view (from more angles).

At last, someone wrote a concise article on AESA, IRST and LO PR.

I recommend reading the linked article for better understanding of situation.

True, but if you want instanteneous range, bearing and track, the best way to do it is with two Pirates and a Link 16.

The December issue of DTI is out (http://www.aviationweek.com/aw/blogs/sponsor/RaytheonExpert.jsp?plcBlogId=e84e5e72-acd2-4089-add0-0925a8698268), and Bill Sweetman kills an old question.
Can Pirate detect, range and track a target? Can Typhoon get a BVR firing solution using only the IRST?
    Yes it can.
The trick is that you need two Pirates and a Link 16…

    Sintra,

Gripen’s ability to use the Swedish link in addition to Link 16, or in addition to the proprietary DL still gives Gripen an advantage, insofar as I can understand it.

Thats true. And while i was pressing the “submit reply” button i remembered that the “NG” offered a satcom modem. So, yes, you do have a point.
Interestingly enough i dont think that TILDS was ever instaled in the FAB Erieye fleet.
There are three drawbacks for the Swedish bird in the Brasilian contest, untried system, one single engine, and by far the biggest problem, lack of political clout.
And SAAB going to a public meeting with an ex-president (Sarney) after Lula made clear is preference was akin to “shooting is own foot”.
It will be Rafale first export (and the Brasilian Air Force will have a hell of a fighter).

    Cheers
