And who could forget the test pattern with the girl and the cuddly toy! Is that ever on now btw?

I’m sure I’ve seen it at 3am (ish) during the text type broadcasts.
They tracked that girl down last year didn’t they?

    PeeDee,
I tried to tell them so, but they just wouldn´t listen! 😮

Most of the rolls being described on this thread are just AILERON rolls! NOT barrel rolls!

All off axis rolls are “barrel rolls” for a lot of people. But there is a world of difference! Like PeeDee says, look at the pictures/videos. If the subject is 90° off the original heading while inverted, then it is a barrel roll. IF not, then it is an aileron roll. Simple as that!
And YES, the Boeing Dash-80 (later to become known as the 707) roll was an AILERON roll, the Transall´s roll is an AILERON roll.

AMB, from watching the clips available on youtube, it was an AILERON roll gone bad, with not enough pitch up before starting the roll. You´d be surprised to learn how many that one has caught out. The latest (in historic aviation) was Brian Brown in a Hurricane at Shoreham. In the report, some will be surprised at the pitch up attitude required for a Hurricane to complete an AILERON roll, at least 40° The AAIB report is not really helpful at times as it is mixing up the terms “barrel roll” and “Aileron roll”, but at the end it becomes clear that they are all along talking about “Aileron roll”.

When I owned a Piper J3-65 Cub, my mentor said I should nerver, EVER, try to aileron roll the thing, I believed him! He had tried and got scared, VERY scared.

Some aircraft will AILERON roll, others wont. I firmly believe the DC-3 is in the latter category!

Another point as to the difference, an Aileron roll requires some time spent “Knife edge”. Climb = nil, so you want some powerful lumps (Or a lot of altitude) to prevent CFIT!
The Barrel of course requires some time spent in a vert climb, again powerful lumps required.
Didn’t the Reds used to do a true Barrel role in Diamond 9 formation? Damn clever! I may be going back to Gnat days here:)

Canon sliders, if you get a “Friday afternoon” one it can drag a lot of dust in, caused by the slight vacuum created…….especially if slid(?) quickly.
Some members of my camera club have experienced this.

As for not being an expert in Photoshop, you must be using some sort of photo-processing????……..as all digital images need some sort of sharpen and/or saturation boost.

    Where’s the Honeymoon?

    Stop winding him up.
He thumps Bass for his mortgage, what’s he gonna do…turn down work?

Sometimes, one has to download an alternative set of standards / principles /
morals to earn a crust. Money wins and absolute money wins absolutely.

The Transall clip, and the 707, and many others discussed on here are Aileron rolls.
The only True Barrel Roll clip is the US Navy training film. Quick clue, at perfect inversion the machine is 90 degrees to the original direction.

I hear many a numpty commentator at Airshows saying Barrel roll, when it is clearly Aileron.

And yes, the Aileron roll is no great stress on the Airframe. A clumsy landing would be far more of a worry.

    April! Oh how common!
Society Weddings should be June. Traditions, like standards, are thrown out yet again.

Ah well, it’ll be worth watching. She’s fit.
