That’s interesting to know – nice to have some reliable info. All the other references I had seen suggested both Lightning and Harrier were at Malmesbury.

Lightning XM173 is now in the care of Sir James Dyson and is located at the Dyson headquarters in Malmesbury.

Britains unhealthy obsession with the USA

As compared with the unhealthy obsession that the USA has with the USA, as amply demonstrated by yourself.

I can’t take credit for the footage – it was merely the most suitable video of that particular display that I could find on YouTube.

I am pretty sure that the display is flown in such a way as to keep excessive G to a minimum (even with Kev Rumens at the controls!) – the rather severe looking wingovers are pretty much G neutral, in spite of appearing otherwise.

In answer to your last question; Yes, XH558 does have live ejector seats for pilot and co-pilot, just as the Vulcans did when in service – the cost of servicing the ejector seats is one of the more significant costs within the winter service.

It still has more credibility than Burma.

I am not sure that it does. TIGHAR have spent many years (and a lot of other peoples money) searching where the Electra almost certainly isn’t.

When presented with some very well researched and persuasive evidence of the actual whereabouts the remains of this aeroplane, they moved very quickly to pour scorn on it.

Call me a cynic, but they give me the distinct impression that there is no real intention of finding anything, other than a continued income stream for the TIGHAR hierarchy to fund trips to tropical islands.

Credibility is one they have a severe lack of.

‘inaccurate , misquoted or purely bigotted reasoning -so anyone who disagrees with your Vulcan views falls into this category!

Certainly not, but there are quite definately a number of people who are aggressively and immoveably at odds with everything that VTTS do or say and do not seem to be able to comprehend that others do not share either their viewpoint, or the reasoning they draw their conclusions from.

I think we all know what the viewpoint of the principle posters on these threads are (those on both sides have reiterated their standpoint more times than I can keep track of), and I see nothing to be gained by going through the same old same old yet again.

Guess you don’t feel like naming the aviation projects then?

My previous post not clear enough for you? (or do you get some sort of kick from trying to stir up fresh disagreements?). There are a number of projects/charities that I do not think worthwhile, but I am not arrogant enough to expect everyone else to agree; whether or not others wish to support them is a matter for them – I don’t contribute to them, and that, as far as I am concerned, is that.

How about naming one aviation project that you feel is a gross and pointless waste of money ?

What, and start another pointless argument??

If others wish to spent their money on projects I don’t see as worthwhile, that is up to them. It is not my place to tell them they shouldn’t, and I don’t expect ather people to try to tell me I am wasting my time/money on the projects I am interested in either (particularly when the arguments used are so often based on inaccurate , misquoted or purely bigotted reasoning).

Looking at the historic house price rises………. you can see a very clear correlation with the recession that started in 2008.

It was pretty clear to many of us that things were starting to slow or even go backwards by 2005/6. House prices are a very poor guide (as indeed are most of the areas that are so often held up as an indication of the health of an economy) – and in any case, the effects on those type of criteria do not become apparent for some time after any economic contraction takes place.

Either way, the need to attract large scale contributions for running costs only became necessary in 2008.

There are many projects both within aviation and elsewhere that I regard as a gross and pointless waste of money – I don’t contribute to them, but I do not feel the need to continually and unrelemtingly harass and harangue those who do support those projects; neither do i need to twist and distort reality by cherry picking pieces of information and taking them out of context as some on this thread are doing. Everyone is entitled to their point of view, but I see no reason why people who support the continued flying of XH558 should be continually treated in the way that always occurs whenever any item of news about her surfaces (whether good or bad).

Must have found some more engines, then ?

No; but they do have two useable spares, and have been talking to Rolls Royce for some time with regard to reworking the algorithms used to calculate the engine cycles, and discussing the possibilities for possibly extending the permissable number of cycles which RR had allowed on these engines (…I understand from posts on the VTTS forum, the originally permitted 1200 cycles was vastly less than were allowed when in RAF service). As they suggested last year that there were insufficient engine cycles on the (at that time) useable engines to make it worthwhile doing the leading edge mod, maybe they have had some success in these discussions?

They have also now been permitted to re-install the engine removed at the end of the 2008 season (due to a high debris count in the oil) – that one is now back in the aircraft.

I imagine they will ‘juggle’ the 6 engines they have between the next 2 seasons to maximise the remaining flying time.

……the majority of fundraising for her return to flight must have taken place prior to August of 2007 and outside of the
    economic meltdown in the U.K.

Anyone with any kind of eye on the general economic situation had already seen things going rapidly downhill for 4 or 5 years before that – the truth: we were already heading into an economic recession when the restoration started.

I really do think some of the views expressed in this thread (indeed in every 558 related thread) are quite pathetic 🙁

Still a bit larger than some of the roads it would have to pass through though 😉 Are you prepared to fund the cost of that kind of operation, because I know darned well Lincolnshire County Council haven’t got that sort of money available.

I think it’s all pie in the sky. And I wouldn’t give any story in the Lincolnshire Echo any credence unless I have read it somewhere else first (and most of their stories rthat have any basis in truth have usually already been reported elsewhere; sometimes several weeks before. One of the most inaccurate and poorly researched so-called newspapers I have ever come across to be honest.

…I’m reluctant to say in case its sensitive…

Perhaps better not to have mentioned it in the first place then?

but it would be good to get XM607 under cover

How would you propose getting her to Scampton? Bit tight through Lincoln, and no easy way round either.

Thank you for posting that – certainly some interesting paintings, and a clear concise potted history.

‘Fighter Pilot’ was among the first aviation/WW2 books I remember reading (when I was about 10 or 11 I would think), and I found it fascinating even then – it is one of the books that did so much to arouse my interest in aeroplanes.

But the car was buried within a concrete chamber – concrete in proximity to steel = rust in copious amounts.

Hardly comparable to aluminium buried within wood 😉
