I remember when I was in the RAF that the start ground crew used to have to hold onto the blades of the Britania’s Proteus engines as they spooled up, the blades “could” start turning the wrong way. Then, when turbine was up and running (you could feel the tug of the blade on your shoulder), you would push the blades in the right direction. Trouble was, could never remember if it was clockwise or anti-clock! Anybody else here ever had to do this?

    RE: Canberra over Edinburgh

    Hi Damien

    “Probably an RAF one”

Good call mate, as there are only two non-RAF Canberras in the UK that it could have been – WK163 and WK128. The first is a long shot at this time I reckon, the second, well, the “don’t shoot me” stripes would probably have been visible and this TT.18 doesn’t stray too far from Llanbedr these days.

Agree though, would have been a PR.9, they seem to have been getting about the UK a fair bit recently, including one doing a day of “rollers” at Fairford.

As for the Cranberrie’s longevity. . .well, what about the B.52? And the Sidewinder AAM is 50 this year as well!

But as the old saying goes “Smile when you look up, you’re picture’s being taken.”

    Thanks David

“Just pointing out again no duplicates please !!!”

OK, didn’t notice that before. “Significant” aircraft . .

    1 Hawker Hart
    2 Avro 707
    3 Fairey Delta 2
    4 EE Canberra
    5 Hawker Harrier

    > . . . or indeed the most significant.

De-lurking here to say that the choices so far have been pretty good. My own list would be . . .

1 Hawker Hart (a very “significant” airframe)
    2 DH Mosquito
3 EE Canberra (Can’t understand why nobody has mentioned this “significant” aircraft.)
4 DH Comet (The pax kite, not the racer)
5 Hawker Hunter (It just “looks” like it’s a fighter)

OK, thanks for listening, back to “lurking” now . . . cheers

    Beeayeate
