I just read on the internet that the remaining buildings at Burtonwood airbase are going to be demolished.

Makes sense as passing there on the way home the other day noticed the businesses that were based there have pulled out. Will try again at the weekend to see if the security guard will FINALLY let me have a look round before they go 🙁

iirc the hangars were for sale at one point for I think £80,000 each!!!

    Ahh I see, Sorry Jon,

I never realised, I knew XH837 was at Caernarfon ,but have never been there,

of course i expect they must be rare as most were scrapped in a era where aircraft enthusiasts were still interested in spitfires etc, or that being the main interest in military/aviation, etc just look at the explosion of aviation archaeology after the film “Battle of Britain” was released , so i imagine most of the Jav’s ended up in the melting pot,

Oh no worries – if you ever make it up there well worth a look round. They have lots of little things like that to pour over. Can see if they will let me take some measurements for you when I am next out that way if you want?

One factor was probably the sheer size of a Javelin. I had forgotten just how big they were until getting up close to one again at Newark recently. Also conversely, probably why so many Sea Hawks survive 🙂

I must say Jon, that is one nice set up you have there, I bet thats taken some work to get up to that sort of condition,

Wish it was mine but is actually the guts of XH837 at Caernarfon Air Museum which have been removed and made into a display near the a/c.

It’s a thread I have bookmarked as it is a handy reference tool.

    You mention 4F Jon.

Lookin at mine again the first prefix could either be my originally though 111F or just maybe a 14F. Does that fit in with what you see on your panel?

Also did Doves have ILIS? I wasnt aware that they did.

Well a quick trawl on here (god bless the search feature) and 14F is the Dove’s bigger brother the Heron 🙂

Good find Jon – what was it from?

    TT

Well initially thought it was Anson knowing at least one ended it days at Speke, however turned out to be off DH Dove XJ323/G-AMXY

One stamp was a DH Hatfield inspection stamp and the another started 4F which Bruce tells me is a Dove prefix. Some more research showed 2 Doves meant their end (scrapped) at Speke in the early 70’s with only one of these having ever been a military machine – hence I got the a/c id 😀

Of course I am happy to be proved wrong and be told it is from a 312 Czech Squadron Hurricane 😉

All I need to do know is to find the cache of snapon tools buried on the airfield somewhere after the war when the USAF pulled out………

    Any manufacturing stamps on it?

I found one recently at Speke (in a bush on the old perimeter track) and the stamps on the back of it eventually helped me pin down the a/c it came from.

Certainly has to be in contention for winner of the most atractive looking Dak award.

Not if you put G-AMPY back into her old starways scheme 😉

Once again it boils down to how you are defining capable – which was the original question I posed. Capable as in had the potential to (which all of them did) or capable as in was modded (only 32) accordingly. Which from the above it is a Vulcan that was modded – sorted 😉

Looking at some of my books it states that only 32 of the 89 Vulcan B2’s produced were ever modded to carry Blue Steel.

So that brings me back to my original point – ALL were capable but only 32 were ever suitably modded up to take it 😀

A daft question possibly, but by what criteria are people gauging “blue steel capable”? Surely every survivor today was “capable” of carrying blue steel, whether they DID or not is another matter….

In a rather sad observation I recognise the scenery in the background from photographs as the exact spot where Britannia G-ANCF was dismantled 20 odd years ago 🙂

    First recorded powered airplane fatality

“Tragedy struck on September 17, when Orville Wright crashed at Fort Myer while flying with First Lieutenant Thoms Selfridge, who became the first person to die in a powered airplane crash. Orville recovered, but lived with the pain resulting from the accident for the rest of his life. “
