[QUOTE=F4MPHIXER]Is there plenty of Vulcan parts available?QUOTE]
Good point! 😀
So as a test of the vulcan spares market anyone know where two Vulcan B.2 control sticks could potentially be sourced from?! A pretty obvious part that is missing i think you will all agree. 🙂
Count me in for an initial £100 with more to follow to aid the restoration,
Is there a preferred county/area for restoration/storage and display?
I guess delivery of money would be acceptable once the hurdle of initial purchase price and acceptance by the current owners is sorted?
Cmon Guys dig in –
Rocketeer – to some it may sound a regimmental scheme – but it sounds a fair and agreeable arrangement to me.
correct wildcat – folks keep hold of your money until the whole plan has fallen into place! 🙂
Well i cant really argue with any of the points people have mentioned.
So far all that has happened is I have canvassed to see if the initial spark was there to progress with the idea. Didn’t seem much point looking into surveys and transport if it couldn’t be purchased! 😀
Having generated some interest i would was we can move on a step now and I would whole heartedly agreee with going and looking 391 over. As i have said before the last time i saw inside was 1994 and i cant believe conditions have improved since then.
As for possible locations should she be purchased – people please make suggestions! From a cost point of view i would have said somwhere in the North West to keep transportation down. Plus as a general observation Vulcans are rather thin on the ground in these parts so potentially more interest could be generated locally. Though again if people think otherwise please speak up!
Plenty of hard work for us all there. I would love to get my hands dirty!! 😉
Just need more forumites to offer there support towards purchasing and preserving it now…! At the moment totalling up what people have actually physically offered looking at about 1K in the kitty so far. Others have offered but so far have yet to put a price to their offer so to speak 🙂
Oh and need somewhere to store/display it…. 😉
Not exactly recent (31st May 1994!) but dug out some pictures of inside XL391 – sorry for quality but had the poorest camera know to man on the day!
Sounds good to me! 😀
What do other forumites think?
If I had my way, I would like this project to be a ‘peoples project’,
i.e. a share scheme. So the cost of initial purchase and transport to a suitable museum or location would be worked out and then converted into a number of share certificates. That would get XL391’s nose saved.
The actual restoration could be in the form of additional shares, i.e. a fund of £500 to buy materials. With any luck our workforce would be made up from the shareowners and any museum staff. This may seem a little regimented, but it gives the average enthusiast the chance to have shared ownership for a small cost, i.e. £100 a share. Shares when someone wants to sell would be available to the group members first. This would therefore be run on the same basis as group ownership of an operating aircraft.
Just my thoughts, but I feel there are many on this forum who would probably like the idea of part ownership of the ‘People’s Vulcan’ cockpit and could afford the modest charge of say £100 to £150 per share?
Have started a new thread – “XL391 support” to make life easier in tracking progress and interested forumites! 😀
Count me in as well jon details as per my pm
What sort of numbers are we talking in terms of forumites interested?
Viewing is absolutely essential as the e-bay pics were taken at angles that did not give all round coverage of the exterior.
Thanks for offering your support 903 🙂
Knowning XL391 as I do, the internal state is not good. When I looked at buying it, I made the decision that if I did I would strip inside and restore the external to A1.
Trust me inside is bad and you have to assume whats in there is scrapped and therefore you have to scratch build any items. Unless our current goverment would allow a restoration group strip one of the USA Vulcans for cockpit parts??
I hear the scrapy dropped the cockpit 3 times when scrpping it.I for one would support the saving of XL391 nose, it has a personal attachment to me.
Where would it go? Those who worked on it must be insured to do so if on private propert – a museum as an example. This world is full of H&S issues these days.
I might be able to help having XL391 mounted as I have a spare rear craddle mounting stand that I might part with (costing nearly £2000) and I known of a front tressle that could be borrowed.
Also has anyone got any recent pictures that could be posted here from inside 391? I have a few but they were taken circa 1993…
I’d LOVE to help! Jon H, you on Merseyside?
Well near as dam it! After a recent move am now a merseysider living just inside the Cheshire border! 🙂
Though in case further clarification is needed am now also aware there is a “John H” on here as well – subtly different but not the same person. Apologies to JohnH if you are getting PM’s about 391!
Also keep those PM’s coming people. The list is steadily growing! 😀
I am happy to offer my services to help co-ordinate things.
Would start a list but have no idea who has offered what!? Folks PM me and I will start drawing up said list. 🙂
Just heard it is still available and open to sensible offers. 😀
Apparently they wont quote a price but said if you make the right offer then its yours…
I’m not 100% certain, but think the scrappers involved are Sandbach Car and Commercial Dismantlers of Moston Road, Elworth, Sandbach. Tel: 01270 763256
Thats also what i turned up after a few minutes on the internet! 😀
Though now just need a phone – currently in a computer server room doing some maintanance before anyone says anything! :p
That is unless someone else fancies calling them now…? If someone does then please PM me. Thanks.
” I would suggest contacting them first to make sure that they want something sensible for it and not some inflated figure.”….
Can anyone help with this? All i know is that it is in a scrap yard somewhere in Cheshire….
Jon H – Avoid all the internet nonsense and ring them direct -far easier!
Fair point 😉
Though was using the posting more to see if other people showed some kind of interest in saving the nose. See if XL391’s suggestion of it becoming forum project number 2?? But not exactly seen a flurry of activity on this front!
