The 410’s props are definitely cut and apparently her electrics are fried !
While its fantastic to see these airframes recovered, it would be great to see a Dornier 17 recovered in similar condition. As I recall, none survive in one piece.
Now that’s a flightline I’d liked to have walked along…:)
Mr Collins have you seen the film, sadly mute, of the Hornets of 33 Squadron in Malaya on the British Pathe website ? Outstanding stuff. Also on the same site Sea Hornet construction at Hatfield. Enjoy !
Maybe the idea is ‘managed patina’. The airframe, if unrestored and structurally sound should be left but conserved in a responsible and attentive way, with regular inspection and kept in a sympathetic indoor environment. Compare the Science Museum Hurricane and the Finnish Air Force Museum Hurricane. Both superbly original with priceless character, however one is trussed up and completely covered in dust, thus impossible to inspect, the other on her undercarriage, accessible, viewable, easy to maintain and to monitor any deterioration. Thoughts ?
2 Red Arrows into Northolt this morning. Departed 16.55. Nice !
Hurricane was R4118
All this talk of healthy Merlins reminds me of a story I heard at London Colney regarding the restoration of one of the Mosquitos to ground running status. Any more on this, chaps ?
The book by Bruce Myles ‘Night Witches’ is a great read.
it doesn’t help having forced labour build the engines either !
I remember reading somewhere that a very sophisticated form of sabotage was carried out during engine manufacture by qualified engineers employed as slave labour whereby the angles of some of the fan blades was altered fractionally, enough to allow them to fail at any time during operation. I think Eric Brown commented on this when the time came to test fly captured Arado 234s. Each engine was considered a time bomb !
Fascinating stuff. Any news on the fate of the pilot ? Almost cringed at the shot of the salvager fishing around in the water since seeing the pix of poor Sergeant Lazarev.
Some good stuff at British Pathe too !
Thanks for that Consul. Talking of things French I came across a story somewhere…probably Warbirds Information Exchange…about a gentleman in Texas building from scratch a flyable Potez 633….!
A friend has recently completed the restoration of Aiglet G AMYD. Pics on YouTube under the title ‘Austerfin’. First test with Keith Pogmore in command.
