Ethiopian Mig-23ML
Thanks for the great photos of the Ethiopian Mig-23’s.
I have noticed on a number of Mig-23’s that on the front edge ,side and top edge of the air intake the colour is often darker than the rest of the paint in that area can anyone tell me is there a specific reason that this happens?
The second Mig-23 photo with the aircrew standing in front of it is a good example of this.
I thought maybe it was less faded because of a cover over the front of the aircraft but the rest of the forward section is also very faded.
SAAF logo
That is not an “national insignia”
It is a South African Air Force 75 year anniversary crest/badge/logo and was also used on the SAAF C-130 and SAAF museum Mirage IIICZ and various other aircraft during 1995

Wow
WOW FANTASTIC! Awsome photos thank you!:D
It will be interesting to see just how well the Cheetah stacks up to the Kfir head to head
I believe that the flight performance of the Kfir will be superior, the rest will depend on systems fit.
What’s the story on the Angolan MiG-23?
Hi,
The aircraft was being flown for Angolan Air Force by South African “Contract Pilots working for Executive Outcomes” against UNITA in eary 1990’s
According to a guy that was there at the time..
Quote:
“Pilots Name was “Pine” and after an engine failure glided 25nm to a sucessful wheelsup landing. The wheels would not extend fully without hydraulics and the aircraft suffered minimal damage…….until……… they “Angolans” shifted it off the runway sideways with a tank rather than recover it to a hangar”
Unquote.
It seems as if it was later put in the hangar and abandond or used for spares.
When looking at the picture of the 3 aircraft it looks as if the 1st aircraft has a much bigger hump that feeds straight of the back of the canopy while the other 2 seem to have a bit of a bubble canopy. Can anyone explain this? Is this some kind of upgraded Hunter?
Also does anyone know where they got there Hunter’s from. I believe they have 5 active? Were these originally bought brand new from the UK or are the second hand from another country? It’s great to see such a good aircraft still flying. It just shows for most ground attack missions you don’t need some fancy aircraft and you can use something much cheaper. The Nato air forces could do with taking a lesson from this. I’m not saying for example the UK gets rid of it’s Tornado’s but it could just as easily operate a much cheaper aircraft with the necessary equipment in Afghanistan.
Its a twin seat training aircraft, instuctor and pilot sit side by side
That heli never flew with that paintjob, it was applied after it went to the museum.
It’s a complete fantasy, no other aircraft carried it either.http://www.aircraftslides.com/Auction/AuctionDetail.aspx?ID=562708

Its fantastic to see such a nice photo of a Mozambique Mig-21, I know of only one other photo of these aircraft (seen in one of this forums earlier threads)
Does anyone have any other photos of these Mig-21s?
I understand that up to mid 80’s there were about 48 of them operational with Russian, Cuban and a few other nations pilots.
“Cy24driver1” DUDE!!…Always awsome stuff from you!!!
Lovely shots Migman!
Hey Cy24driver1, awsome photo’s thanks, particularly the Angolan Su-22 and L29’s.
I would also really like to see those Zimbabwe Mig-23s….and those Namibian ones!
I am looking for photoss showing the top of the deralict Angolan Mig-23 ML that is parked by the damaged hanger at Saurimo airport, Angola.
You can see it on google earth, but resolution way to poor to see the top cammo.
Interesting photo, Pakistani Mirage with South African Air Force Mirage wings that Pakistan bought as spares, wings still in SAAF cammo.

Wow,thats hot, If only!!!!
I wonder what the performance would have been like compared to Cheetah C, Mig 29, F-16, Mirage 2000,Gripen etc?
I know the Cheetah C’s really struggled with the Indian Mirage 2000’s in an excersise a few years back, anyone have more info?
Heres a gun camera photo from SAAF Mirage F1CZ showing the problem, Missile detonating on the jet plume of the Angolan Mig-23ML too far to do any serious damage.
This happened when launched against Angolan Mig21 and Mig-23’s
