Yes it was great – 4 Mustangs flying, Spit VIII, Boomerang, Meteor, Sabre. Unfortunately the 2 P-40s couldn’t make it.
Hudson, Catalina, Neptune, unfortunately the Canberra is being rested for a while.
Last airshow for the F-111, went out in style with plenty of dump & burns – being WFS in December. First show of the Super Hornet – noisy, now I am really deaf.

Wow, a novel and unique way to calculate operating costs!

Shall we call this the jackoff-jackoff method?

by the way our SH are costing $90,000 an hour @ 200hr per yr

Let’s not be mischeavous jackyjacky – where on earth does $90k/hr come from? If you are trying to compare it with something, then let’s please see orange & oranges.

The Jag force mates I spoke to about the incident thought that Roy Lawrence and Alistair Inverarity were harshly dealt with. I think that speaks volumes.

I remember this was a Friday afternoon – the F-4 crew went up to Bruggen to buy Steve G a few beers in the O’mess happy hour.

    J-band is actually X band

No it’s not. X-band (the designator used by the radar designers) is I-band (used by the EW world). Most AI radars are around 9 GHz.
J-band (EW designator) is Ku-band (radar designator), with fighter/attack applications typically (for ground map/attack and TFR) around 16 GHz.

It’s a compromise between range and resolution, and what antenna can fit in the confined space of a fighter.

You need a long enough range to detect the bad guy before he sees you, sufficient resolution to distinguish a formation, and once you have confirmed as hostile enough range to fire your F1 or F2.

A higher frequency than X/I band (say J band around 16GHz) would provide better resolution, but not the longer range required in A2A.

Anything below I band, the antenna is too large to fit in your fighter’s nose.

Leslie Holden’s red SE-5a B129 was not flown on 2 SQN AFC, but on the Australian SE-5a training unit, 6 SQN AFC, based at Minchinhampton. Holden had finished his tour on 2 AFC, and was instructing – the intructors on the training squadrons had colourful identifiable aircraft. Cobby’s black-and-white check Camel of 5 SQN AFC at Leighterton was another example.

    $3bn for 12 F-18E? 😮

    No. Much less than that.

    A mix of E and F.
Throw in a sim, training, logistics, a few years running costs – not much change out of $3bn.

[QUOTE=mrmalaya;1582392]i have just read a tweet off of FlightGlobal from a regional journal that says Typhoon is being offered to Malaysia for the MRCA.

Malaysia is not an easy country to pin down when it come to second guessing their procurement.

    QUOTE]

You’re right – not easy to pick procurement of several SE Asian countries, the way they do biz!!

Late 1980s it looked a monty that Malaysia would get Tornado. That fell over.

Funding is a problem – and they went Russian because of bartering palm oil instead of hard currency.

But now they have learned – bad serviceability of Fulcrums and Flankers, due to short component life and ongoing support.

Gripen – doubt it, as pointed out Thailand has it, they would want something better.

Eurocanards – prob too expensive, unless perhaps they could swing some funding assistance from another Muslim country, but in this climate everyone is stretched.

I think they would be happy with SH to replace both D and MiG, but again cost would be the problem. 12 aircraft, about $3bn.

2500km radius?? Not a snow ball’s chance in hell!!
