Surprisingly enough “Area 51” is there!
And there is a skin you can get that points out all the features.
Found this, thought I’d found a UK Ekranoplan! (St Athan)
And the others are not for VC-10 fans!
The two collections for whom a Swift would be essential both have one – RAFM and Southampton. Sadly, whilst I would love to see it restored (The Swift is my favourite 50s jet) I can’t think of another collection for whom a Swift would be ‘must have’
At Calshot it was mounted on the stern of an RAF tender and flown off that (the worlds smallest aircraft carrier?).
Somewhere I have a picture sequence of that trial when the rotor head broke and almost decapitated the pilot.
As Rotor kites, these are probably the rotary equivalent of the SG38 type glider
This is the nearest photo to the jet pipe that I took, If it doesn’t show you what you want to see, then I can always whiz up to the store over the weekend and take some more.
Plazz
Thanks for that one, it certainly shows more of the eyelid afterburner than I’ve seen before.
I can more see them being bought by Survey companies in the manner of the modified B(I)8s used in the States.
That’s is the RAF ever does retire them……………
How long is it since they got rid of things that didn’t fit into the RAF scheme of things (Dornier 24 for one)
I can’t understand why people want to hang on to aircraft like this when it’s basically just acting as a billboard. .
It’s a hard one to fathom. My understanding is that NEAM face the same problem with their Swift, in that the owners don’t want her retored anymore.
One of the detail freaks – note the higher fin fitted to all but one Swift F4.
Plazz, don’t suppose you have any photos of the jet pipe/afterburner area – IIRC this is the only one of the surviving mk4/5 Swifts with an engine
Most Lend lease was owned by US Govt, not uSN, so slightly different – USN has an archieologists view
3000 ft is shallow compared with the deep oceans. I’d guess the Fulmars were in the forward part of the hanger and fell out when the bow ripped off as she sank.
The fish looked like an angler fish
The S330s were there on Friday as well, so I guess they must have over-nighted.
I’ve seen that Ryanair/Boeing 737 at other airport, noteably East Midlands doing touch and gos (For about an hour it was always within site of the terminal)
Anyyone know if the Ryanair aircraft on the North side are stored there?
Except for viewers in Scotland, who got it at half past six.
Interesting program, the aircraft wrecks look like they would disintegrate if you touched them
Sid Cotton used a very similar colour early on in his work which he called Camotint – although it worked very well against the sky, it was much less sucessful in hiding the machine from above when parked or at low level.
Which of course was adopted by RAF/FAA as Sky – which will be the underside of the Spit, er sorry, Seafire when it’s finished!
Guess who I am?
I was going to PM you to ask if I could share them with Richard! I have similar angles on a black one!
I fully agree with you Martin, this is what I have been trying to tell them all along – this is indeed a very good ‘mock-up’, but ‘NO’ we are going round in circles trying to find some reason why this shouldn’t be! I think we have to admit it’s a very convincing ‘mock up’, but there it is!
Actually, this fascinating thread seems to me to be a classic investigation – various possiblities of varying probability investigated and eliminated before reaching aconclusion that stands up to interrogation.
By co-incidence I have been researching this myself recently. First off, there is NO Dominie T2 – the designation was proposed but not taken up (when all were converted, there was no need for a new designation).
The nose was extended by 12 inches, which is clear from most photos, but it also appears to have been widened to accomodate the new radar (derived from the Lynx Seaspray IIRC) – the increased width appears to start from a point just forward of the windscreen. The radome has a much rounder plan profile.
Your first photo was intruiging as it appeared to show the extended nose, but the original radome, and I thought all the updated aircraft had the black scheme – but a search finds XS727 in 2004 in original scheme but modified nose (radome is slightly different)- you can see the repainted grey on the nose:

and this angle shows the shape of the junction between the extended nose and the fuselage – note how it tucks in around the undercarraige

perhaps shown even better in the full version of your original picture

if you PM me I can share more of my findings.
I think the badge is the 6 FTS one from when they were based at Finninley, showing the white rose of Yorkshire
