Further to my last, I have just sponsored two names on the splendid BoB memorial due for London….only £10 each name and a chance to help ensure that future generations understand and are thankful for the debt we owe. The memorial is absolutely wonderful and worthy of our support. – You don’t know where you are going until you understand where you came from.
My favourite poem on the subject:-
On Weald of Kent I watched once more
Again I heard that grumbling roar
of fighters planes
yet none were near and all around the sky was clear..
borne on the wind a whisper came..
Though men grow old, They stay the same
and then I knew, unseen to eye….
the ageless Few were sweeping by
Lord Balfour of Inchrye
Indeed, a huge debt we all owe….go thank a Vet today and everyday.
Thanx for posting it Geoff…sober stuff and reminder of the total debt we owe
Sorry to hear that Rob…I cannot come unfortunately but Ashley may if you ask her nicely!
EMC testing methinx….the aircraft is live (blanks etc fitted).
AH4040 (sometimes stated AH04040)…..fits all Spits and Hurris
You can also sponsor a aircrew name on the monument for £10, there are still 1308 names that are not yet sponsored. Follow this link for more info http://www.battleofbritain.net/bobhsoc/monument.html .
Alternatively, you can come to our museum on the 26th September, meet some Battle of Britain pilots, & get them to sign a print, book, or whatever you bring along. It’s £10 per item with ALL money raised going to the monument. Last month we raised £2,300 at a similar signing for the monument. more details here http://forum.airforces.info/showthread.php?t=30626
Who knows I may make you as famous as Steve Young
Geoff.
Geoff, I have offered to sponsor two names on the memorial and am awaiting to find out if they are still available!
regards
Tony
Snap. AR501 has always been my fave. However, no gun panel wear, no cordite, no use of the radio hatch and resultant wear, modern footprint treads rather than 1943 pattern treads (OK, I jest)
“Half a kill laddie, half a kill.” 😉
AR501 also has her IFF aerials! BM597 is cool too!
Does anyone have any details or photos of the dig of a 109E (pilot was Gleser) in France and a pilot called Frohlich in an Fw190 (Wnr 178928) in Germany, 21/11/44…any help gratefully received!!
Sorry Becka, cannot make it as I have my girls for the weekend to celebrate my birthday!!
Email sent.
Could always request Goodwins (Battle of Britain March !!!) theme to the film ?????
The opening music is fantastic….its called Aces High – (Luftwaffe March)
I like the idea of sponsoring a name on the memorial!
Interesting posting Philip.
What we need to do though is split off the private operators who can buy and operate what they want as it is their money. The big institutional official museums like the IWM are a different matter. It is time that more was invested into saving rare and unique British designs and aircraft that are not considered worthy by many people. (A bit like the Beeb not just making tv progs that appeal to the masses). The BAPC produced a listing of airframes of National Significance to the UK, IWM have many on this list and have the wherewithall and space to do something to save benchmark airframes.
Regarding Sally B, I firmly believe that this is part of our rich aviation heritage given that 58,000+ young Americans died flying from our soil.
Good question! The main one is the ETPS aircraft. There used to be a couple more but I have not seen them recently.
Nice pix Shorty….is your title piccie 105 the BAC 111?
Hello friends
