RE: what does Cricket mean ?
I have it!
From the Collins English Dictionary:
“(…C16 from Old French cricquet, goal post, wicket, of uncertain origin)”
So there you are chaps, even the experts are not absolutely certain where the name comes from!

RE: National Anthems
Hi Hand87,
I confess that I don’t know the words to Rule Brittania, apart from the silly version I posted. My post was facetious. I readily accept that many of the world’s older anthems may refer to flogging some poor bloody neighbour, but the music itself in many cases can be quite emotive.
For example, whilst it’s not an anthem, I find Land of Hope and Glory to be a very evocative and stirring piece of music. I am not aware if there are lyrics to it, I’ve only ever heard it played as a tune. Sir Edwin Elgar wrote it about 1910 and as he got older, he heard it so often that he commented he wished he had never written it. Sure, it’s a piece of music written when Britain was at its absolute height of power, but I don’t think that diminishes the music in its ability to evoke emotion. To me, that is the mark of good music. Whilst God Save the Queen may reek of loyalty and tradition, it is a bloody awful tune, with stupid lyrics.
I honestly believe Britain needs and deserves something better. It would be quite feasible for a composer to write an anthem which still carried the sense of loyalty and devotion to Britain with it, in a more modern and contemporary manner.

“We need to play normal nations…”
What does that make the Aussies – abnormal or just extra-ordinary?
Xanadu
“English cricket is dead…”
I sure hope you’re wrong. England is the traditional home of cricket. It would be tragic for this sport if England never again finds its way to the top. I can’t imagine that this will not happen. The British population is over three times that of Australia. Surely with such a pool to draw from, England can eventually find the players to compile a strong and successful team.
These things go in cycles. During the 70’s, the Windies were all-conquering, now they are well down the list of the world cricket ratings. Australia has been at the top before, but during the early 70’s, we got flogged, frequently. Now we’re back on top. Our turn to fall will come again, just as surely as England’s turn to assume greatness will.
Don’t lose faith, England fans. I won’t.

RE: what does Cricket mean ?
Guys,
I love cricket, and have always considered that the only real “Test Cricket” is that played between Australia and England.
I too, wish that the English team was stronger and could make a real contest of a Test series. I derive no pleasure from the manner in which the Australians are winning at present and yearn for those days when the English were “the enemy” and wins came at a high price, fought out over five days, with the result in the balance until the final session on day five. The time must come when this is again the case and I look forward to the English team belting our blokes around the paddock.
Mongu – please pardon my ignorance, but are you referring to football when you talk about “real sport”? If you are, then you’re right – our efforts at “soccer” are pretty half-hearted. That’s possibly why we do better at the two Rugby codes.

RE: AFM Forum
As I don’t use the AFM forum much, its persistent failure doesn’t concern me.
But as a curious bugger, who likes to understand how and why things work and don’t work, can anybody explain why the AFM forum crashes so often, if it uses the same operating systems and programs as this and the other two forums, which seem to be able to function well nearly all the time?
I suppose if we knew the answer, the poor old Webmaster could fix it for once and for all, but why one forum and not the others?
If anybody cares to venture an answer, please use the KISS principle for this poor old fart.

RE: National Anthems
Oh, I don’t think the version I’ve heard is too “martial”…
Rule Brittania, marmalade and jam,
Five chinese crackers up your a…….., bang, bang, bang, bang, bang!
True, God Save the Queen is bloody awful. Until the mid 70’s, it was Australia’s anthem too, then we got rid of it.
Yep, got rid of the world’s worst national anthem and took on the world’s second worst – Advance Australia Fair.
What a dirge. It has one stupid line that says “Our home is girt by sea”. As someone said, it sounds like your singing about some old hag at the beach.
Peter Allen’s hit, “I still call Australia home”, which was adopted by Qantas as its theme song in a splendid series of commercials, is a good song with sensible lyrics and a memorable tune. “Waltzing Matilda” has a nice tune, but lyrics about a sheep thief who drowns himself when he’s caught with the goods, is hardly national anthem material.
Many countries have really rousing national anthems, and that’s what they’re supposed to do – stir your emotions and make you proud of your homeland.
But God Save the Queen…spare me days!!!
